Are those cheap chinese flash gels kit ok to use? They range from USD 1.5 to 7, a lot less then the USD 30 Rogue kit.

It will be for occasional use, with my Nissin 40i (which is on the small side).

Does anyone use one of those cheap ones?

Thanks

Do you have a link to these 'chinese gels'?

I still get free Rosco and Lee swatch books from my lighting supplier. Each has about 200 gels. At a push, these can be used on speedlights, though I tend to buy full size sheets and cut them down.

When you put one of these gels in the holder make sure that there is a bit of space between the gel and the holder/flash head for air to circulate for cooling and they should be fine.

1/4 and 1/2 CTO gels are the most useful. When doing sunset portraits the camera is always set to Daylight - Auto WB will eliminate sunset/sunrise colors. I don't use a gel at first, only adding a 1/4 CTO when the faces start looking "too white". I switch to a 1/2 CTO when the same thing happens. I might combine the two for 3/4 CTO but I never go to a full CTO gel since the skin starts looking pumpkin colored.

I don't use a CTO gel indoors. I use my strobes for the main lighting and let the tungsten or "warm" CFL or LEDlamps take on a nice warm glow.

The brightly colored gels are good for special effects or backgrounds.
