Looking for a lower cost DX equivalent (35mm focal length) lens and spotted the above lens : Those with experience please advise if the AF will work with current D3xxx / D5xxx DX format cameras ? If so , is AF acceptable along with I.Q. considering this lens is approx. 20 years old ? ... Thanks in advance !

As the lens is AF-D, not AF-S it will not autofocus on the D3x00 and D5x00, which lacks the retractable screw to drive the AF-D.

The D type lenses have CPU's which will provide distance information to the camera body and this does not necessarily preclude SWM in-lens motors for AF. Many of the first AF-S lenses were also D type, such as the AF-S 300 f/4D, AF-S 28-70/2.8D and AF-S 80-200/2.8D, and all of the first AF-S (and AF-I) 300-600mm supertelephotos were also D type.

However, it is correct that the AF-D primes shorter than 300mm have mechanical AF drive which is not compatible with AF on the D3x00 and D5x00 series of bodies.
