Why not Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS? It's sharper than either of those lenses and offers better AF performance.

I think the problem is it’s twice the price.

I'm also looking for an alternative to pair with an a9. I rarely need that much reach, but want to have something when I do. I’m considering Tamron 100-400, sigma 100-400, and now Sony A 70-400...

there is a clear gap in affordable super tele options for FE. I think there are a good number of people who can’t justify the spectacular, but expensive FE 100-400. (As much as we all want it.)
