I have a kenko 1.4x pro 300 dgx teleconverter that was working with a 5D2. Autofocus used to work with this converter and a 70-300 f5.6 lens (resulting in f8).

I tried the teleconverter today with a 5D4 and I got several problems:

- 00 aperture with a Canon 70-300 USM IS II

- Camera unable to focus or take pictures with a 100 f2 lens

- Camera did not turn off with Sigma 50 mm f1.4 lense

After removing the teleconverter and turning the camera off, the camera works again.

Is there a compatibility problem between the 5D4 and this Kenko teleconverter?

Could these problems be an indication of either camera or teleconverter malfunction?

Maybe an incompatibility, but one thing to check is how you're mounting them. The recommended method for Canon's own TCs is to mount the tele-extender first to the lens, then the combination to the camera. And remove the same way. Communication can be buggy if TC is mounted to the camera first, then the lens to the TC.

I had the same problem with this teleconverter and the 6D. The last camera the teleconverter worked on was the 5D2.

I guess the firmware of the teleconverter needs to be updated. It should resolve the issue, but you have to send you teleconverter to the customer service.

I send an email to technical support and I am waiting for an answer.

Do you know if kenko has a firmware upgrade for the 5D$ that is applied for free?

You might make sure that any lens corrections are disabled in the camera. On earlier bodies, this can cause issues with the Kenko converters .

Thanks for the suggestion. Lens corrections were off and still had the same problem.

Unfortunatelly not. I sold mine instead of doing a firmware update. But I had the same problem with SIgma and they updated the firmware for free. Well, it tells nothing about Kenko but you could try. IMHO they should offer free firmware updates.

I emailed Kenko and they confirmed that the Teleplus PRO 300 1.4x is not compatible with the 5D Mark IV with the Canon EF 70-300 F4-5.6 USM IS II lens. They also said that upgrading the firmware is not an option.

On the other hand, the teconverter worked fine with the 5D Mark II and the same lens. I was even able to use autofocus at f8.

I think Canon is using a new protocol for use with new lenses and new cameras, resulting in faster focus speed and more accurate focus. If either the camera or the lens is older, probably it reverts to the older protocol. I have a 5DS and that Kenko converter, and I have no issue with the lenses I tried, which includes the new 100-400, 135L and 200mm f/1.8 lens. All worked fine, although I got better results without the teleconverter, so I don't use it (same with the new Canon converters, which I rented for a test).

I had the same problem with this teleconverter and the 6D.
That would be the first I heard of any problems with the 6D, or any other camera that had a max of f/5.6 for the center AF point. I never had a problem with the DGX pro 300 1.4 and a 6D with a wide variety of lenses, old and new. With my 7D2; it acts like it added a virus to the camera's firmware. I heard that if you disable by-lens MFA, it is supposed to go away, but I haven't remembered to test that.

One day I grabbed the DGX by mistake when I meant to take the older DG, and was certain that I would be without my 7D2 for a couple weeks, in the shop, because the displays made no sense and it wouldn't fire, even in manual-everythingly. When I got home, I looked at the rig and saw the DGX, after not being able to take any photos, because removing the TC in the field did not make the system work again, it was so corrupted. Apparent, I never though of removing and replacing the battery with the TC out of the equation, but thought I had tried everything.

6D works past f/5.6 with Kenko DGX 1.4x. Sigma 150-600C is at f/9.0 (600mm) and works flawlessly.

Yep, Success!

My 5d4 is working fine with the Kenko Pro DGX 1.4x and EF 300Lis F/4.0. I had to turn off Micro Adjustment to get it to work.

Strange thing is. I can leave Micro Adjust on for my 24-105Lis and the 100-400Lis with this Kenko.

Proof is here,
As I have to change exposure when using this teleconverter I might as well take off the Micro Adjust and power off (battery out) and power on before using this lens.

I'm on the latest firmware 1.0.4 and hope I can still get Magic Lantern loaded when that comes available.
