Generic MB-D18 battery grip for the D850

Aargh - I JUST ordered the Pixel grip off Amazon a few minutes ago - and paid $19 for Express shipping.

Are you going by photos to assume that the Pixel grip won't handle the EN-EL18 battery?

I notice that most of the other generic sellers of the MB-D18 do not claim EN-EL18 compatibility.

Yes by this photo from the link : you can see the contacts are "high" ; on ebay DSTE and Mcoplus claim en-el18 compatibilty, you can see for yourself.

So it looks like Pixel did a lousy job this time. I don't even see the AA battery tray. Odd because they've always made good grips, but this one looks like a loser at this point.

These are cheap enough that you can get one for now until a better model comes along, but the Pixel more expensive and seems more limited.

Rob

Best option for now appears to be the DSTE Pro Wireless Remote Control MB-D18 on Amazon for 70 bucks. You'll need the battery cover for the bigger battery and 9 FPS.

Jut got a Mcoplus grip arrived today 19th ordered on the 12th I am in the UK.

tried it with my EN-EL 18 and it gives 9fps but slows after 3 sec with Raw much better with jpeg

Regards

Mike
Thanks for the info. Are you using a Nikon OEM EN-EL 18 or aftermarket one?
I am using a Genuine Nikon EN-EL18

I got my Mcoplus grip, and the DSTE battery with integrated charger and cover works for power, but does NOT Give 9fps. This was also the case apparently with the Nikon grip, so I guess it makes sense. I have ordered DSTE EN EL18 battery, charger & cover (separate, and will see how that works out)

Bill and Others,

If Watson has a plate for the EN-EL18, and I'm pretty sure they do, I'd go that route. I have a Watson dual charger now, and plates for the EN-EL15 and EN-EL14 (for my D500 and my daughter's D3200, respectively), and the charger works great. It has a gauge that's more accurate than the camera's for giving amount of charge, charges quickly, and you can charge two batteries of varying types or the same type at the same time.

Something to consider.

Sam

Mcoplus battery grip arrived this morning, it seems a well designed ( read: copied) product.

It connects well with the camera , no trembles, no shaking, very well contoured, well assembled rubbers , all the controls are in the right position and work.

The camera finally sees the Patona en-el18 battery + bl5 as it should and I have 9fps.

Defect:

The two command wheels are not rubberized and they are too much "shielded" by the grip so they are not easy to turn as the Nikon ones.

OK, I now have the Mcolplus D850 grip, with a Newmowa 3rd party EN-EL18 battery from amazon working to give 9fps!

Cool!

I've been shooting with mine for days and it's the same as my other grips.

Which battery door/clip thingy did you buy for the higher capacity battery?

I hacked the AA battery holder that came with the Mcoplus for the moment, which just about works, it seems to keep the battery in the right position. I could not get the DSTE battery cover on amazon prime.... so its on its way from Hong Kong.

Bought the DSTE MB-D18RC grip off of eBay. $70 (make them an offer) includes the grip, two battery trays (EN-EL15 & 8-AA batteries) AND a remote control. Hence the "RC" I'm guessing.

Took three weeks to get to me but given that shipping was free, it was coming from China, Christmas season, Bomb Cyclone weather where it entered the US and then it had to be sent to the west coast all in all not too bad.

Bottomline everything works. All controls do what they are supposed to do. Shutter release is very good.

Little digression here. I had the DSTE grip for the D800.

They have improved the release from their D800 grip. Much more of a discernible feel between 1/2 shutter and tripping the shutter.

Control dials are smoother in texture than the previous grip so you have to put more force to get a grip on the dials when turning them.

Joystick Multi selector feels just like the one on the D850 body.

I have the DSTE EN-EL18 battery which has a permanently molded BL-5 adapter to let it work with the MB-D18. The great thing about this battery is that for $40 you get a EN-EL18 + BL-5 + Charger + Car Charger!

The chargers plug directly into the battery. You can even plug the charger into the battery without removing it from the grip. Never used the car charger so I have no idea how long it takes to fully charge the battery. Just good knowing it's there though.

All those naysayers and whiners moaning about how there is a ridiculous cost to get a grip onto the D850 with a EN-EL18 battery either just like to complain or haven't checked around enough. $40 bucks and you're in the game.

Plus, this D850 grip comes with a wireless remote! Just a simple push the button, camera takes a picture remote. No time-lapse or any other feature but still handy to have if you don't have a remote already. Works best in line of sight but will work around corners. Gives you a range of about 30ft.

Big question for a lot of folks is does it give you 9fps with the EN-EL18? Truth is I don't know. it sounds like it gives you a higher frame rate and over 5 seconds timed it did give a couple more frames than just the body alone. But did it give a definitive 9fps? I wouldn't stake my life on it.

Finally the build quality. Does it match the Nikon $400 MB-D18 in construction or materials used? No. It's plastic not magnesium. But in the whole scheme of things is that a deal breaker for you?

Look you can buy 6 of the DSTE grips for the same price of the Nikon grip. It fits tightly on the D850 without any rocking or wiggling. The rubberized part feels and looks the same as what's on the D850 body. Not to mention the remote control. Should the grip die at a critical moment, especially a paying job, that can be all sorts of bad. I used a DSTE grip on a D800 for 6-years and had no problems - ever. If this DSTE D850 grip works as well as the DSTE D800 grip I'm not going to worry about it failing. For me it's worth the risk to save a few buck and go with the DSTE grip. Your mileage may vary.

OK so thanks to advice picked up on these forums, from Amazon UK, I ordered:

1. Mcoplus Vertical Battery Grip Holder Replace MB-D18 Work For Nikon D850 Camera

2. Ex-Pro® Nikon MH-26, MH26 EN-EL18, EN-EL18 sequential Dual Fast Charger with 2 x EN-EL18 Battery - for Nikon D4 digital SLR.

3. Ex-Pro Nikon BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover for D800, D800E

All arrived and as the previous reviews of this grip said, well built, feels good but the control dials are not rubberised, no biggie.

Gave the batteries a good charge overnight, connected up the grip, selected continuous high, hit the "info" button a couple of times and voila ........ the screen shows the CH icon with the 9fps ..... nice :-)

I use a D850 with an original el-18a battery, genuine battery door cover, but with a cheap ebay battery charger and the MCOPlus grip (previously would only use genuine Nikon grips, but didn't have the option)

Everything works perfectly, and the grip seems to be pretty spot on, all in all I am glad the genuine one wasn't available, not sure I would have seen any benefit - if the lifespan of the grip pans out ok. (or even if I only have to buy an extra one or two in the same timeframe, I'd still be heavily up on the cost of the genuine one!)

The DSTE battery you have will not give 9fps, I have two of them bought for my D500 grip.

If you want 9fps you have to buy one of the commercial en-el 18 that works , a bl5 cover and a mh-26 clone charger : about 120$ more.

You need also to wait for someone to confirm that a DSTE D850 grip will give 9fps with the right battery, not all of these clone grips will do.

Just starting to look at these, are there any reviews comparing all the 3rd party options out there ?

Personally I do not care so much about the 9 fps, I only want the grip to shoot vertical in the studio.
