Hi all,

I currently have the 6D since it came out and have been very happy with it.

I only find it lacks focus point and maybe a little speed from time to time, otherwise great camera with a great IQ.

But now that the 6D mkII is getting down in price i am considering if it might be worth the upgrade.

Anyone else, who have done the upgrade - if so, was it worth it ? :)

Thanks,

Im not coming from the 6D. I got the mark ii as an upgrade from a 70d, which is obviously much more easily justified, but I still think I can add to the thread in a constructive way. I got a refurb 6d ii and, just like when I bought my 70d, Canon went above and beyond and I ended up with an AWESOME deal.

1st, to this point I am far more than happy with the camera! Coming from a 70d and having comparable results of 1600iso to now over 6400 iso is a HUGE deal. But I know the differences are less coming from a 6d so I will give my opinion on what I know from the 6d.

FOCUS!! The focus speed and accuracy is straight up impressive. Especially in low light. Im counting eye lashes consistently. You cant exxagerate the importance of reliable AF as far as Im concerned. With that said, the AF area is a bit annoying and there is still a need for some focus and recompose in some situations. Also, you can choose smaller AF spots, like on the 7dii, that has proven to be helpful already.

Flip screen. This is something I used to joke about. I still hear people calling it a "selfie screen" but once you have a flip screen, you def dont want to go back. I use it ALL THE TIME. Much easier on my back when I want to keep the camera low. Also, for crowd shots or other high compositions, you dont have to just hold the camera over your head and hope to get lucky. Its also awesome for portraits. We all know the kids that instantly turn away when we put the camera to our face, and we know the bride-to-be that gets all duck faced too. Sometimes you can look like your just looking at the screen and ninja a good candid, or have eye contact with your subject and snap while we are working our magic.

Dual pixel AF - If you shoot video - even just casual video, the tracking is AWESOME. It does better than my 70d also. Im guessing the improvement is from more, and more condensed AF spots. Add the live view focusing that dpaf gives us to the flip screen and you will get shots youd otherwise miss. Let the haters call it a selfie screen or condescendingly call it a flippy screen. I call it ridiculous when a camera doesnt have it.

IQ and DR - Its like a vice on my head. This camera is so ridiculously good. The tech in these cameras was unimaginable just a few years ago. And yeah, Canon should have probably made the sensor more comparible to the mark iv, but businesses will be businesses. But the bottom line is, is that the differences for most uses are negligible. If you REALLY need clean shadow recovery of over 3 stops from the original, just take multi exposures and blend. Its more than good enough.

Pretty soon people are going to be complaining that we cant just grab a 30 megapixel still from a video shooting 240 fps with 18 stops of DR from our mobile phones. Imagine what we'll all be saying to our "photographer" children then.

I wish the 5dmkiv had the flippy screen. Still not a deal breaker as the 5dmkiv is better in every way.

$1700 is still overpriced, IMO.

$1300-$1400 (new) is the correct price, as shown by the recent enthusiasm at that price. Prices will fall again soon, since there is some very interesting competition coming in the sub-$2K range (including APC-C).
Agreed.

I got mine refurb WITH the 24-105 STM for $1400. Im selling the lens and have offers for $300 but Im holding out bc Canon ended up giving me a new lens/not a refurb and it sells for $599. So if I get $400 for it, that brings price to $1100. Refurbs from Canon are good as new.

For a person coming from an APS-C camera or an older FF camera the 6D2 is a good upgrade. A person coming from a 6D or other recent FF camera then not so much as there isn't enough improvement to justify the expense, IMO. The exception might be if one can get a good price on their current FF camera and this makes the jump to the 6D2 cost $300 net, or less.

I am upgrading because of face detection AF mode. I love it on Canon M2. It works extremely precise. It focuses on eyes much better than I can focus with single point AF. I wanted this feature on affordable FF camera for a long time.

Imagine that all you need is to frame a shot and press a button. Camera finds face and focuses on eyes extremely precise. Even wide open at 1.2 aperture. I am very excited. Ordered 6D2 today.

This. Esp if you like buying new/need warranties etc. There isn't something THAT compelling to move to a 6d2 for me. I'm mostly perfectly happy and I don't see anything "game changing" on the 6d2. The 6d is still awesome itself and maybe it was one of those cameras that Canon put "too much" good stuff in, esp at the time it came out. There is some game changing stuff out there, but I can't afford it. There is no doubt the 6d mark ii is a BETTER camera, but just ask if you need it or not. With limited funds, maybe a lens upgrade or addition would be more helpful. Usually you get the most "bang" on an upgrade when skipping a generation anyway, unless you are the type to constantly upgrade. I usually try to do that with all my electronics like computers/iphones, etc....but sometimes my hand is forced b/c of way too much time between releases, or something dramatic like... "wow dslrs can now shoot video" ..

It's probably a great jump for people used to features on 70d/77d/80d and want full frame with a good warranty and modern features they are used to like wifi and DPAF. Also great upgrade from a 5d mark ii probably.

Good reason to buy the 6DM2. Its face focusing feature is accurate and fast. I tend to use it more frequently on live view, just because it's easier.
