Canon 5Div Shutter Release problem

Yesterday I went on a Mountain Hare shoot and I got a complete surprise when my 5Div would not fire. Basically it achieves autofocus but then on full depress of the shutter button there is nothing. All of the items below made no difference.

1. Changed battery.

2. Left battery out for a few hours.

3. Changed lenses.

4. Removed and reinserted memory cards.

5. Complete reset using menu item.

This would have been a complete disaster had our Hare guide not had a 1Dxii I could use. I did have my Sony A7Rii as a back up but AF is a bit hit and miss with Canon glass so I went with the 1Dxii as I previously owned a 1Dx mark i. Got some great images but still it was a tad stressful start to the shoot.

Its still under warranty but any advice gratefully received. There doesnt seem to be a lot online about it this issue, not with the 5Div anyway.

I should have said it doesn't work in live view either. AF is achieved but shutter wont fire.

Does it work with a cable release? With self timer?

Same problem in both AI Servo and One Shot?

Are all your lenses Canon lenses?

Might you have a vertical grip and does it work with that?

Has it ever gotten wet? Once it warmed up, did you still have the problem?

I hesitate to post this possibility because it is so lame, but is there any chance the self timer is on? I've done this once or twice.

Apologies for late replies folks. I thought I had signed up for notifications for replies and just assumed I hadn't got any.

To answer queries;

1. Yes it works with cable release. Thanks for suggesting.

2. Timer is not on and it doesn't work using timer with shutter button. Timer does work with cable release.

3. I've tried both Canon and Sigma lenses doesn't work with either.

4. I don't have a grip.

5. Its never been wet and worked fine the day before. It was in a bag overnight prior to the morning use before.

Given it works with cable release I can only assume its a faulty shutter button.

No Mike it wasn't on timer and doesn't work either when timer is activated via shutter button.

I should say I just checked and it does work also when using live view and touch to shoot.

Yeah tried that and still nothing. See my other replies too for more info.

I'll be sending it to Canon this week. I'll keep you posted. Looks like a faulty shutter button, no idea of cause but it does work using a cable release or touch to fire shutter in live view. Shutter button doesn't work in live view.

I got sand in the little gap around the shutter release button on a 70D once and it behaved in a similar fashion. Use a stiff brush or blow the shutter button out with some canned air. That worked for me.

Cheers Peter, I'll give that a try.

I was experiencing similar issues but intermittently. No impact, sand, or water exposure.

Sent it to CPS. Gold-level repair was $190.

Service Details:

"Your product has been examined and it was found that the contact of the upper cover assembly was faulty causing one or more buttons or controls to operate improperly from time to time. The upper cover assembly was replaced."

Scott I have it away to Canon CPS at present. They suggested a £250 limit for the repair.

I'll update when its returned.
