Favourite pocketable camera?

Very pocketable, very capable. One of the few pocketable cameras that has external flash with TTL metering. I love the very fast prefocus shutter lag.
My slightly earlier LX3 is still a favourite go-to camera, and yes, the LX3 with an Olympus FL-50 flash on top gives great TTL but at a cumbersome weight penalty.

The LX3 received a whole new life when the raw files are treated to DxO Prime noise reduction, no more noise to worry about at base ISO.

And of course the CCD sensor delivers distortion-free video of high speed subjects.

If your pockets only fit a smartphone your trousers are no good.

Not sure why you replied to me but truly am, the wrong person as I have no smartphone, or even a dumb cell phone.

I want to be left alone,

I can't contact anybody, but way more importantly, nobody can contact me.

When you attach the FL-50 to the camera you need to think you are carrying the FL-50 and the camera just happens to be attached. It's the same as when you attach those long barrel telephoto lens on a small DSLR. ;-)

At the moment it's the Sony WX7 as it's very small, light and has a lot of features. But I'm thinking of upgrading to a Sony RX100 IV camera with more control over the exposure.

Brian.

I tend to agree that the RX100 1 is my favorite pocket camera because of the zoom range. I wish Sony would figure out a way to get the features of the RX100 V with a longer zoom. For images for facebook, the iphone is fine, but they don't look good to me when you increase the size whereas I can get really good printable shots form the RX100 cameras.

It's usually photo image quality verses more zoom range.

I don't see much reason to carry anything but a phone for this purpose anymore. Phone quality is getting very good and I already carry it for a myriad of other reasons.
Just to put a counter idea down . . .

I guess it depends on how waterproof your phone is.

My family and I go to water parks or the beach each summer.

My wife's Samsung S5 phone is supposed to be water-resistant / water-proof? But she will not take it anywhere near the water.

On those days, photo taking responsibilities falls on my Fujifilm XP80 waterproof compact camera.

Even if cell phones are amazing . . . I still would rather risk a <$200 waterproof compact than my cell phone.

I guess the other reason I don't like shooting with my cellphone much is that I have bad eyesight.

It is such a hassle to move my glasses up so that I can see the icons on the screen to try to set up the cellphone camera to get the shot. Whereas . . . any of my compact cameras, I pretty much have the button layouts memorized and can change settings and take pictures quite quickly.

Not that I don't use my cellphone . . . it's just that it is definitely not my favourite way of taking pictures. :(

Take care & Happy Shooting!

As the title suggests I am wondering what camera you use on a regular day when you are not planning a photo but instead take the camera for just a bit of fun or incase you see something interesting?
Out of the pocketable compact cameras I've had, the two that I've enjoyed using the most have been the Canon S90 and the Fujifilm XP50 (or the Fujifilm XP80 I upgraded to.)

The Canon S90 was considered a good camera because it used the "bigger" 1/1.7" sensor, versus the smaller 1/2.3" sensor that was in a lot of compact cameras back then? It also had a faster aperture at its wide end, and shot RAW and had a full compliment of exposure modes, including aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual exposure mode.

To me, this made the camera less frustrating to shoot with since when I got into difficult shooting / lighting conditions, I could just set the camera to where I wanted it to be, and not have to try to trick the camera through auto modes.

But, unfortunately, I dropped it one too many times, and the lens stopped extending / retracting.

I'm playing around with the idea of getting a Canon G9X(II) to replace it. I'm sure if I got one of the Sony RX100(x) or Ricoh GR(II) or Fujifilm X70, any of those cameras would quickly become my "favourite pocketable camera", but the Canon G9X(II) is about the price point that I'm willing to spend for a vacation camera. And if it's anything like the Canon S90 it's replacing, I'm sure I will have a lot of fun with it.

My other favourite pocketable camera has got to be my Fujifilm XP50 waterproof compact camera.

It does not shoot RAW. It does not have manual exposure modes. It has a small sensor. And it can sometimes be a bit slow. (The Fujifilm XP80 I upgraded to fixed that.)

But it makes up for that by simply being there. LOL.

I can trek out on a lake for a canoe ride, or stroll out into a lake with my kids and not have to worry about the camera in my pocket. If it gets wet, well . . . it's waterproof! So I can enjoy myself and not have to worry about my camera.

And . . . the shots I've gotten from it just being there means a lot to me . . . these are candid shots of my family and friends, that I wouldn't have if I had to leave my camera behind all the time.

I've been seriously considering something like that for my daughter - she is turning 8, and seems to have an interest in photography. I don't want to get a kid focused camera, because if she doesn't end up sticking to it i'll have a waterproof camera for myself! :)

Good point. My tiny Nikon Coolpix is my go-to camera while kayaking or swimming. I took it with me to Iceland this fall because of the constant rain and ended up getting some decent shots I otherwise would’ve missed.

I’m hoping my new little Canon G1X III will be able to do as well in rain, since it’s “weather-sealed,” whatever that means, but I’ll still carry the Coolpix when out on the water.

Get one! LOL.

I like the Fujifilm XP cameras because they are relatively cheap compared to the others. But they still IMHO bang out great pictures!

Along the way, my daughter ended up with a Fujifilm XP50, that I pull out while we are on vacation.

I've got the Fujifilm XP80. It's a lot faster than the XP50 and has better auto WB performance. And it has Wifi to transfer pictures to your phone, and it works really well. So IMHO any Fujifilm XP80 or newer. :) LOL.

I figure . . . for what they cost, if I get a handful of keepers from each vacation, the camera has really paid for itself.

Some might scoff at such a utilitarian camera, but for me . . . I actually stopped shooting with my dSLR cameras one summer because I wanted to recharge my batteries. I picked up my then waterproof camera (A Fujifilm XP50) and realized because it didn't have an exposure mode dial, or ability to change aperture settings, etc. that I was spending more time looking around and observing light and shadows, composition and . . . while on vacation . . . actually enjoying myself! LOL.

As for controls, it has IMHO the 2 most useful controls quickly accessible. Exposure compensation and flash forced on / off. Give me those 2 things and I'm good to go. :)

Hope you have fun with your waterproof camera! :)

Take care & Happy Shooting!

I was looking at the Canon G1X (III). Awesome camera!

That's got to be nice with that APS-C sensor! How are you finding it?

A while back I was humming and hawing over the Canon G3X. That camera is supposed to be weather resistant. And a respectable 1" sensor. I was considering that as a camping / vacation camera, but . . . I am just really drawn to a pocketable camera for our treks to amusement parks, thus why I'm transfixed on the Canon G9X (II) right now to replace the Canon S90 I dropped at the end of last year.

But as you say . . . sometimes there will be a reason to go with a smaller (less expensive?) camera.

I've really come to the personal conclusion that there is no "one" perfect camera for me. I am finding a use for big cameras and small cameras alike. LOL.

If you like SONY's 28-100mm f/1.8-4.9, you would REALLY like Canon G7X's 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8.
If I like blurrier images, sure
My G7X images are pin sharp but why not throw in some Canon hate, it's always very constructive. Sony images will certainly be bokeh free at 100mm due to pitiful aperture if that's the kind of "sharpness" you're after.

G7x mki. Good to ISO 1600, fast lens, descent focal range. Fits in jacket pocket or in side bag as a daily carry. Vastly superior to the expensive smartphone cameras in IQ, operation and customization. Not as sharp as a DSLR kit lens but increasingly, I have accepted convenience.

I was taking a long hard look at the camera before the Canon G9X came out.

Nice lens! A nice step up from the Canon G9X(II).

As others have said, phones are increasingly the way to go when you're looking for 'zero mass penalty' ad hoc photography.

The simple truth is that even if I'm not planning to take a picture, if I'm going out for the day I will inevitably have either the M10+elmarit/cron, Q or one of the MFT bodies with a pancake with me anyway. Unless it's actually the size of a phone, you're not really carrying (well at least I'm not, it'll ruin the lines of my pants or jackets) even an RX100 in your pocket anyway.

I've always had the RX100 since it was released in my bag as a backup, and also as a primary carry when I don't want to walk around with anything else. But in the last year or so, I've noticed that I hand the RX100 (which I still carry around everywhere) to others - because they might have an ancient phone - instead of using it myself most of the time. It's really got to the stage (since I never use it for video now) where I could be carrying the MkI instead of the V and it probably won't hamper *my* current uses for it at all.

That's causing me to look to re-upgrade the one-box compact to something that's not 100% portability focused but something that's actually more usable and potent, i.e. something that's not an adjunct but could be used by most as a main camera, but still easy enough to slip into a bag and occupy a space not that much bigger than the RX. The more I look at it, the more the G1XIII is looking like a contender... but it's not *quite* there. I will probably have to check it out though.
Over the past few years, I've been trying to hone down what my ideal set-up of cameras might be.

When I think about it, there are 2 restricting criteria I come up against that really restrict the cameras I look at for vacation / family excursions.

My 1st restrictive criteria is that I really do want a camera I can stick in my jeans pocket. My family and I go to amusement parks, and my daughters are getting older so we are going on the faster rides. On the faster rides, you are not allowed to have any carry-ons! So if I had a camera that I couldn't stick in my pocket, I'd have to leave it in the "bin" at the loading area of the rollercoaster. (I'm not really in the mood to do that.)

So any camera that doesn't actually fit in my jeans pocket, is out as an all around vacation camera for me. :( Even my Pentax Q, which is a really small mirrorless, gets left behind on days that we go to amusement parks, where as my Canon S90 (before I dropped it one too many times) or my Fujifilm XP80 waterproof camera fit the bill.

And I guess, the other criteria is that I really appreciate a waterproof camera, because we go camping, to the beach and water parks. So . . . I can have the most amazing camera, but if I'm unwilling to take it somewhere because I'm afraid of it getting wet, then what good is the camera to me. LOL.

So I have been personally finding that I seem to buy really big cameras, (because they get the job done when I need to make sure I get the shot) and really small cameras (ones that can fit in my pocket) so I don't have to leave my camera behind on vacation.

I guess, for times I can walk around and not have to worry about getting the camera to fit in my pocket, I just grab my Pentax Q, Pentax ist DS or Nikon D5100.

But out of all the different types of cameras I have been researching . . . it has been the hardest to find a really nice compact "pocketable" camera that doesn't cost an arm and a leg! LOL.

Big capable cameras! Besides being expensive, are easy to research and find.

Medium size cameras that don't fit in my pocket, lots and lots of nice cameras to choose from! LOL.

But small pocketable cameras that pack a big punch . . . it's the most research I have done to get a camera! LOL.
