If you wanted to replicate this shot, which lens would you use?

What does the Olympus 75mm 1.8 offer this photo over the Pansonic 42.5mm 1.7? With the 42.5mm, you could get closer to the subject and achieve more bokeh, despite the longer focal length of the Olympus, no?
I have the Panasonic 42.5/1.2 and Olympus 75/1.8. I prefer to maintain more distance away from the subject to make them more comfortable. To obtain that bokeh with my 42.5/1.2 I have to be a lot closer, sometime to close for comfort both to me and the person I'm taking the picture of.
It'd be my daughter, so no harm done :-)

Assuming this is not a cropped image, the subject distance was approximately 15 feet with a DOF of .44, so I would use the Olympus 45 f1.2 at 9 feet for a depth of field of .43 feet for approximately the same image height.

Keep in mind that with the longer lenses, the subject will have to be further away from the photographer. That makes it harder to get the shallow DoF and background blur characteristics in that kind of image.
I know that. But the shot looks doable even with Pana 200mm f2.8.
I think you would get the focal area of the subject around the same. But the out-of-focus areas would be more defined, more in focus, won't fall off as quickly.
Not true.

Using your DOF calculator reveals that Oly 40-150mm @ f2.8, 150mm has a shallower DOF compared to Oly 75mm f1.8. At twice the distance from the subject of course. But the background is definitely more out of focus. That is what the calculator says.

I'm having a really hard time trying to decide which lens to get next. :-D I'm hoping maybe you guys and gals can help.

Please make your selections based only on the photo below, placing a high value on sharpness and shallow DoF, and not the versatility of the individual lenses.

Three part question:

1. Of all the MFT lenses available, which would you use?

2. Of all the MFT lenses available under $1000 US, which would you use?

3. Of the lenses you own, which would you use?

Please feel free to include your aperture, focal length and shutter speed choices.

A quick search of google for the images shows it was taken with a Canon 135mm F/2.0l on a 6D wide open at 125ISO .
Thanks for spoiling the fun....

So an exact copy of the image in m43 you would need a 65mm F/1.0 which is hard to come by,. So I would go with the 75mm F/1.8
Anyway. I tried the DOF simulator and 150mm f2.8 on a m43 camera came quite close to 135mm f2.0 on a FF camera.

Meaning, Panasonic 200mm f2.8 might be actually able to pull this off, if shot wide open at about twice the distance.

There is of course the lovely Olympus FT 150mm F/2 :-)

I am sure you could but that lenses makes the F/1.2 lenses look an absolute bargain :-)

That sounds about right, but when working with my daughter I'd prefer to be a lot closer :-P And have money left over for a college fund!

I haven't checked the DOF simulator but if I want to completely blur the background like a FF camera I can use my NX1 with the 85mm f1.4.

You could always get a Samyang 135mm f/2 with EF mount and use it on MFT, Sony and Canon bodies. You would have to stand further away for MFT of course. Solves the college fund problem.

I still can’t believe that Samsung bailed on their mirrorless system. The NX1 was/is a superb camera with a sensor performance that managed to compete with the best Sony had to offer and a raft of excellent features. It was the first APS camera I was considering in a long time

The image height is about 2.6 feet, given that the subject has an average size head. You would need to be 40 feet away with the 200mm for that image height and would then have a DOF at f2.8 over twice as deep as a 135 f2 on a FF from 15 feet.

I would use Canon 135mm f2.0 with a Speedbooster... :-)

DOF calculator says:

6D, 135mm, f2.0 = depth of field 2 cm at 2 m distance

GH4, 200mm, f2.8 = depth of field 3 cm at 4 m distance

Quite close.

Thanks for all the suggestions. You have helped make my decision quite a bit easier.

There is also added blurring done in post on that image. I have watched a few videos on getting that effect in post without the use of fast glass. The results can come out very close with cheap lenses.

In my kit five lenses come to mind: 75/1.8, 4/3 35-100/2.0, 4/3 150/2.0, adapted MF 50/1.4, adapted MF 85/1.4.

Because lens rendering is unique to each one cannot dial up a set of specs to replicate one, but parsing DoF tables you can get in the ballpark then look for something with similar focus rolloff and bokeh. You also must consider contrast and saturation in addition to resolution.

Cheers,

Rick

Sadly the 100-400 is over $1000, but i do own one and it is excellent for this type of shallow DoF shot.

The only reason why I kept the NX1 was because I have the 85 mm/1.4. NX1 is poor on action due to severe EVF lag. Other than that I loved the camera.
