Do you really think that somebody will take time to do such a thing ? (for an hypothesis that did not get actual ?)

You don’t have to wonder; that patent for the f/2-5.6 24-120 lens was a g3x lookalike.

Tough to say. The Leica X Vario has a certain popularity among Leica buyers. It has really good IQ. It is a fixed lens 28-70 zoom and APS-C sensor. I own one and have also held the G1X Mark III (Hunts Photo show Boston area USA). The camera size comparison chart doesn't do the size difference justice but I'll post it anyway. The X Vario lens is both larger and slower (!) at 3.5 to 6.4 so size can go either way. Canon did a great job making a relatively small large sensor fixed lens zoom.

Based on all I have read and seen, as noted on another thread, the G1X III isn't what I hoped it would be BUT I would still love to have one. It has strengths and is certainly smaller than the X Vario. There are always compromises. The Leica as always was overpriced but the $2900 became $2200 in short time (slow fixed lens). The Canon is $1300. I have a hunch I'll own one next summer.

In the meantime if Fuji found a way to add a short zoom to the terrific X100F I'd take a look there. If the camera got a little bigger I could live with it.

Merry Christmas to all...

Two fixed lens zoom APS-C cameras...on the site click/change to see the laying face up view....wow:

The outer diameter of the lens housing on the G1X3 is 59mm. On the mockup it is 70mm. I am not sure if that would allow f2 but it would at least accommodate a much larger lens aperture than the G1X3. The shape had to change completely to fit the lens in. The mockup is 2mm wider and 2mm lower then the G1X3. It has a much better anatomical handle and more advanced controls, including a thumb stick. The mockup has to lose either the hotshoe (like the Sony RX100 versions) or the built in flash (like the LX100).

Yo can read more about this idea here

I actually made this mockup long before the G1X3 arrived on the scene but I was exploring the same basic idea which is how to get the most imaging capability with a full set of controls into a compact body size.

Seasons greetings

That's great!

And for the bokeh hounds an f1.2? Hahaha...:-P

my personal belief is that manufacturers' obsession with size is misplaced.

put a 4g connection in a small dslr or mid sized range finder style body and you'll sell a ton.

connectivity is a huge part of the reason phone cameras are so popular

I like that thumb grip on your mock up! Yours would sell like hotcakes!

Need Android too. 4G is useless without some apps to go with it.

A corner EVF on a Canon. You must be kidding! You need to envisage a mock up with 20th Century technology and think of electricity as a newfangled notion to get the canon style right. :)

Samsung had the Galaxy NX ILC with Android, wifi and SIM capability. It was pretty well implemented too. But there is something to the the right combination of size, IQ, connectivity and interface that manufactures will need to figure out to pull the masses from cell phones. It will take some trial and error.

So is size. I actually don’t think manufacturers have focused enough on size. Certainly they haven’t nailed it yet.

But I think they will eventually. Some of them are starting to think way outside the box (like the Light camera folks). I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
