fast aps-c cam with high end autofocus and mirror&mirrorbox, where the mirror&mirrorbox can be removed without the cam losing any function. same with ovf - if you slip it of, an evf appears with bright, large, high res and high dr view. opnly 2 functions more to be implemented in the evf compared to ovf.

not an optional mirrorbox. the mirrorbox is a must part of the package.

not an optional ovf. the ovf is a must-part of the package.

how to solve the techical challenge? not a problem .... nikons engineers need work and interesting challenges.

the product is only allowed to enter the market, if there is no performance difference with and without the must features.

furthermore: cam must with full functionality accept bot lenses of nikon and of zuikos.

reason for this product: technological jump by competition of the two married part-systems. and jump in openness of the users to accept anything that nikon might give them.

of cours not a semi-hearted product., but one of flagship qualities in any respect.

don't think smallish. it is not easy to turn the market and revive the enthusiasm of the nikpon-organization. competition within the organization, competition within the product will regain fitness for the market.

For photographers who can't afford a new D750 for $1500, street price for a used D610 in excellent condition from a reputable dealer is about $900--that offers essentially the same image quality as the D750.
Maybe what I'm describing is a D620. I couldn't recommend that anyone buy a D600 or D610 because of the shutter issues. I was looking for a used D750 and they are staying very high right now. I've run across a few D6xx for slightly better prices but it doesn't make sense to buy one of those and save a few hundred dollars then have to ship it back in for a new shutter, and never know if this will actually fix it. I've read posts where people say that had the same problem after getting a new shutter.

With all due respect, I think you're confusing some of these models...

The D600 had an oil-spot issue, and batches of the D750 had shutter issues.

The D610 didn't have any issues that I'm aware of.

A day and a half later, just a quick summary of results so far.

Interestingly, the responses from this limited sample seem to lean toward (one or fewer votes crossed out; high votes bolded)

APS-C Mirrorless:
  • $500 Entry
  • $1000 Mid
  • $2000 Pro
APS-C DSLR:
  • $500 Entry
  • $1000 Mid
  • $2000 Pro
Full-Frame Mirrorless:
  • $1500 Entry
  • $2000 Mid
  • $3000 Pro IQ
  • $5000 Pro Speed
  • $4000 Video
Full-Frame DSLR:
  • $1500 Entry
  • $2000 Mid
  • $6000+ Pro Speed
I'd interpret this as for 2018, our community thinks Nikon should:
  • Not concentrate on APS-C DSLR bodies
  • Not concentrate on low-end FF mirrorless & high-end APS-C mirrorless
  • Concentrate on:
    APS-C mirrorless < $500 < (gap) < $2000 < FF mirrorless
  1. D850 Mirrorless
    (Mirrorless stills flagship?)
  2. Entry-level APS-C mirrorless
    (Sales & Market share)
  3. Prosumer FF mirrorless
  4. Pro Video
(Mirrorless video flagship / supplement for stills shooters)
This corresponds roughly to providing mirrorless options for the users of the:
  • D850
  • D3### / D5###
  • D750 / Df
  • (New pro-video segment)
And avoids refreshes / alternatives this year for the:
  • D7###
  • D6##
  • D500
  • D5
I think this will be an interesting year to watch, and hopefully participate. I'd personally be most interested in the prosumer FF mirrorless.

I'd go for enthusiast level mirrorless DX.

DX DSLRs are a dead end, because in the longer term people who want or need an OVF will want a decent OVF, and probably want a camera geared towards fast action or low light use.

Entry level is too competitive and the trend is towards higher end, so no point going bargain basement.

On the other hand, expecting to get it right first time at the top end of the market is not a sensible strategy. Particularly if you need a new lens range designed for mirrorless.

And the D500C, D500 with a Canon lens mount. No Mirrorless!
Indeed. A migration to the Canon mount could be a good move for Nikon, essentially it puts them in camera by camera and lens by lens competition, rather than having to win users to the whole system. It would need a full function smart adapter from the EOS mount to the F mount.

"Emerging Asia's female consumers are particularly enamored with mirrorless cameras," -Nikkei Asia Review

Asia buys more mirrorless cameras than Europe and The Americas combined, so Nikon needs to create a mirrorless camera that appeals to camera buyers in that region.

Vote: $500 - APS-C, mirrorless

Not gonna lie, I clicked on an option just to see if I could vote for more than one, and it or course recorded it as my preference. Now I can't even remember what it was...LOL!

LOL! :)

Yeah I wish it let us do more than 1...

I believe there should be a green checkbox next to the one you voted for, and you may be able to click "Change my vote" at the bottom of the list to re-vote?

Eh....my "preference" has been recorded, you have put in the work, just let me know when what I asked for is available and I will buy it. I hope it isn't too expensive.

Husband: "Wou know what I would have done if I was Napoleon?"

Wife: "Yes. You would have stayed back home on Corsica where you would would have sat in your armchair whining about the bad times."

As the new head of Nikon product strategy, I will announce the new V5 and 100-500mm CX lens. We will also have a CX sensor in the D500 body and maybe the D5 body as they have much better AF than mirrorless.

Will be a key year for Nikon and be interesting to see what Nikon 2 system is like and what form and mount factor.

What are Nikon's plan for DL / Aps compact camera, replacements to D3xxx, D5xxx, D6xx / D750, DF range ?

True and another key is price, pricing it sensible including camera, lens and accessories and to fully support Nikon 2 - unlike what's happened to Nikon-1 system and this factor will be hard to get punters to invest in the Nikon 2 ystem due to the lack of support and cancellation of NK 1

Excellent suggestion (slim down D750 body) and merge the D3xxx and D5xxx into a DX mirrorless range and model it in the A6500 body.
