There a Sigma APO 400mm F5.6 Telephoto Camera Lens on eBay UK for $100. Nobody has placed a bid with less than a day to go...

Is it a tele macro?

No idea... I posted the information in case somebody with more knowledge can figure out of it's worth it and buy it...

Hello!

We can't really help you here without a link - there were numerous version, the APO Tele Macro HSM being the last and finest in my experience (I did buy them all over the years), the others ranging from crap/not-so-good to good.

I still keep the HSM version in SA-mount for use on my Sigma SD cameras and love the results. It's a sharp and overall very pleasant lens.

Tell us which version it is and I can provide more info.

Best,

Alex

72mm filter thread - I think this is the poorer version ?

Hello!

It's a mid-aged version - not amongst the worst iterations, but not all that good either (at least from what my own experience with these lenses tells me). I would not buy it at the price you quoted - in fact I would not buy it at all for a second time.

Best,

Alex

You can find APO Tele Macros for reasonable prices, they’ll actually AF on a Sony Camera with a Metabones as well. I also personally liked the Tokina 400/5.6 but it’s been a while since I owned it.

Hello!

Of the "slow" 400s, the Sigma HMS version is my alltime favourite, ahead of various Nikkors and the Minolta 400mm I recently got.

I have been using the HSM for all kinds of shots for more than a decade now and really like the output.

Thanks! Pretty impressing...

I can afford that lens right now, but I'll keep it in the list to buy next...

For the non-experts like myself, could you explain or show in a bit more detail what lens that is, please?

Hello Mark!

The lens version I still hang on to and really cherrish, is this one here:

This is he very last version (here in SA mount for my Sigma cameras) - I had them all (to the best of my knowledge, maybe there were some even more obscure MF versions in the 80ies than I know about...). The AF version (the one before that shown above) was optically quite good, but the HSM versions I had (Nikon and SA mount) were better quite a bit!

To make sure to get the latest and greatest version (also true for the 300/4.0) make sure to have all of the bla-bla shown above => 400mm f:5.6 APO Tele Macro as well as the" HSM" in front!

I do have to say that I have hardly ever seen another "HSM" version for sale though, the last one must have been 5 years or so ago. Then again, I don't look every day of the year, because I allready have it...

Photodo, from when they were the old Photodo, still has MTFs up for the AF version (the one prior to mine shown above, the one I would rank quite a bit below the HSMs from my own experience with either version) - the graphs are saved as an image in the lens finder section; maybe linking does work this time:

http://www.photodo.com/lens/Sigma-AF-400mm-f56-Macro-409/images

I have always shot 400mm lenses from the 1980ies onwards (mostly to make money) and while it won't touch the best of the 2.8s, this very Sigma has checked all of my boxes for a compact slow 400mm with great image quality. I can only highly recommend to grab one, should you ever encounter one in the wild (the same goes for the HSM version of the 300/4.0!).

Best,

Alex

PS: Photodo has all of the old MTFs in the lens finder, in case you are looking for lenses in the time range they covered;

PPS: to make the post fit in here, I snapped the image above with a Helios 44M adapetd to an Oly EM5.1 via a Metabones Speedbooster (Minolta P adapter in between) ;)

Thanks for your in-depth response, Alex. I'm keeping this in mind for future reference for when I'm in the market for a 400mm. For now my Nikkor 180mm ED is long and heavy enough for me.

Just for curiosity: is this the one? https://www.ebay.de/itm/NIKON-fit-S...850689?hash=item3afb4733c1:g:sHIAAOSwYc5aM18Z

PS, I really like the look of the Minolta zoom. Too bad that like so many other brands, the rings turn the wrong way for Nikon users like myself.

There is a non- HSM version that is as good optically but lesser focus performance. Either is a great option, I believe the next link is non HSM.

Thanks

What about the non AF models, is there any good 300mm or 400mm?

Hello Matt!

The version linked should really be the non HSM-AFD.

I have to disagree with your experience on the last non-HSM to HSM-version based on my own experience shooting both versions in F-mount as well as SA-mount though. Both my HSMs (one I still have) were noticably sharper than the non-HSMs I had.

Best,

Alex

Hello!

Thank you for your message and the link!

I always bought the new versions when they came out and was 100% sure that the Nikon version (400 and 300) both had HSM in the last iteration as well... that was many years ago (also selling them) and the link has me down to being only 99% sure now. ;) I don't have the lenses any more but I am sure I kept the boxes (a pet-peeve, don't ask...). I will try to dig it up after Christmas. It should help clarify the Specs of the last Nikon version I had.

If my memory does indeed fail me and the AF-D was the last update for Nikon, then Matt is probably correct, as in it being the equivalent of the HSM Canon and Sigma versions.

I do stand by my previously mentioned conclusion, that the very last version was the best one though.

Will report back after locating the boxes.

Best,

Alex

I still have the Tele Macro HSM version. But the steel lens mount at the back of the lens is damaged I don't know how to fix it. And even if I fix it this lens is a bit too heavy compared to the more modern offerings such as the new Sigma, Tamron, and Canon 100-400s. And the Sigma and Tamron are quite affordable as well, so no incentive to fix or buy another one of this Sigma 400/5.6 lens.
