Superb lens, tripod mounting foot is terrible

Very pleased with the optic, the aperture ring is 'hidden' no markings, the tripod foot is far too small and held in place by flimsy undersized thumbscrews. I'm not bothered by the low speed, this length of telephoto needs to be stopped down anyway.

I said the same thing on a post the day my lens arrived over 16 months ago. Hated that foot and wished for a bigger Arca plate style foot. But I added an Arca plate that day and haven't noticed it since. It works fine. The screws are no problem.

When I purchased this lens I thought the same thing. But I've found the tripod foot to be superior to the latest Nikon 80-400 and 200-400 that I previously owned and just adequate for the job at hand. I really love this lens.

Looks like it solves the easy part of the problem, being the foot itself, the other problem is the thumbscrews. A large clamping ring is far more stable and less likely to come off, as the Fujfilm foot has due to vibration. I have to tighten it every time I remove it from the bag, and can't grip it very well given the small knob.

I still score it as a miss, this type of thing should have been fixed without an aftermarket expense to the lens buyer.

I have to admit I am getting a little g.a.s. over this lens. I hear you can now sell a kidney on ebay :-)

My problem is that the tightening screw wouldn’t stay tight for 20 minutes and eventually worked its way completely out of the hole and into the wild blue yonder.

Exactly, a huge pain which could be so easily solved. The 'disguised' aperture ring without F stops is another miss. These things are easily handled and important to functionality.

Optical quality is awesome, usability not so much

I’ve had this lens since it originally was introduced and love it to bits. I use it regularly and have had zero issues with the thumbscrews. The foot design is admittedly subpar. Even the 50-140 setup feels superior.

Im using a RRS plate on the 100-400 that does the job pretty well.

Here's what I use for stability

The Arca plate can be adjusted along its internal rail

It even has a clip screw so no need for any tool other than your fingers

Can be had for less than $30.00 on the Big Bay

Voila, problem solved

I have this lens, and I have used it extensively for months. I have never had to tighten anything.
