Looking to switch camera brands and I need advice

I currently own the Sony A6500 but after using it on a payed project for the past three months, I've realized that I have a lot of problems with the camera and really the system in general.

I hate that the screen dims while recording 4k or even while recording 120 fps, I don't necessarily think that the colors are all that great (although Sony definitely has improved the colors since my original A6000 first came out), I really don't like the ergonomics of the camera, and I really don't like that Sony is really only coming out with full frame glass (I understand why they are doing that but it sucks for broke people like me).

I think the A7Riii is cool but at this point I really am sick of Sony cameras (I started with Sony) and I'm ready for a change.

My two big brands that I've been seriously considering are Panasonic and Canon. I know they differ in a lot of ways but I really like the content I see being produced with those camera brands. I love that Panasonic is coming out with new stuff and it's actually been really exciting hearing about the GH5s rumors. I love Canon's colors, reliability, and the fact that I can get great third party lenses (Sigma) but I hate that it seems like they cripple their cameras.

So I guess what I'm asking is for advice about the GH5 (or possibly the new GH5s that may be announced) and the 5D Mark IV. I know they are totally different beasts with totally different price ranges but I am a hybrid shooter who is equally into video as I am with photography and I'd love to hear some opinions from people who have used one or both as a hybrid camera and what your experience has been like with them.

Thank you!

What are you photographing?

* Portraits, Landscapes, outdoor action (sports/wildlife), low-light action?

Sigma may be an option if you don't perform action photography. Don't discount Fuji neither.

In my opinion, it depends on your needs. GH5 is a great video camera but it's still a m43, so you are going to carry the "limitations" the smaller sensor inherently has. I think m43 can take great pictures, but a full frame sensor is probably giving you a lot more. And I've seen some people complaining about the video AF system on the GH5. Nothing that horrible, but it's faulty.

On the other hand, 5D Mark is a nice full frame sensor camera, with the highly praised dual pixel AF system. However, if get it you're probably expending more on glass, you may have trouble dealing with MJPEG and you're not going to have full frame 4k.

As I've said, it depends on what you need and what you can live without.

I run social media accounts of college teams in my area which includes making highlight videos of games and taking pictures as well. Unfortunately that means I’m taking pictures and video in a lot of different scenarios. If I could I would just pick up both cameras because I know that would ultimately be the best set up but I don’t have the money for that.

I would be leaning toward a mirrorless system for that to be honest.

So get a cheaper Panny for video. Then the additional camera for still shots is up to your preference. There are plenty of Sigmas for APS-C DSLR that could be a better shooting experience than the Sony E-mount. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is available for a variety of mirrorless mounts. Even with Sigma lenses full frame is still going to be an expensive proposition.

Well, GH5 is currently the best featured video oriented ILC, whose only downside is that its video AF is not as reliable as Canon's DPAF. It also happens to be near the top of what you can get out of that format in terms of photography (which is obviously gonna be less than with the 5D IV in most regards).

Waiting for Panasonic's announcement in a week or so is probably a good idea. If there is any truth to GH5s rumours, I don't think it will be of much interest to you. "Low res", big pixel sensor will be great for video, but I'm guessing less than 12mp for stills might be hard to swallow. But that announcement might result in some interesting price action. Or not, who knows.

Hmm, doesn't 5D Mk IV have a massive crop when shooting 4K video? That would make shooting wide kind of problematic. And seems like a bit of a waste of that large sensor, if video is a big part of your shooting.

Anyway, I think you should cobble together a few kits that you'd actually want to shoot with. Canon has a lot more lenses to offer, so it might be easier to get what you want. On the other hand, its gonna be easier to get something relatively small with GH5, even if it's the largest and heaviest Micro 4/3 camera. At least having actual kits would make it easier to compare and see the compromises of each.
