Hi guys! would appreciate your advice as I´m looking for a FF camera for commercial work, I already own nikkors 28-70 2.8 and 80-200 2.8 two ring. have a day job but have had some work over the years professionally as a photographer for advertising agencies and commercial work for restaurants. I really need a FF to take advantage of the full capabilities of my lenses and currently use a DX camera that has served wonderfully for years. I am looking to buy used since I am currently on a budget and would like your take on ware and how I could purchase a good used FF camera and what pricing I should expect?

I was thinking d700 since its a professional grade camera but would love a D800.

Thanks in advance!

What's the budget?

I'm seeing d800s offered used for < $1,000. If that's not affordable, I don't know what is.

A used D800 would fit the bill. From what you have described thought you don't really need a D800 workhorse, any full frame camera will meet your needs as described.

$400 to $800...

ok! thanks!

I'd suggest you focus on total cost of ownership rather than up-front-capital costs (unless you are totally skint).

This makes the D700 look over-valued in the used market, in my opinion. It's also fantastic for most things, but I think you'd come across times when you would want higher resolution.

As usual, your total costs, including lenses and lighting is what matters, and ensuring that your best lenses cover your main needs.

D750 grey mkt for $1179 or US with grip $1499 or used D810 ~ $1800

Ditto on a D600 OR a D700. You're not going to find a "pro" full frame camera for $400, but you might be able to get a used D600 or D700 for about $800.

The D600 is going to have better image quality and higher resolution. 12mpx vs 24mpx. The D700 has a slightly better AF module.

Photography Life has a comparison between these two cameras, so you can decide what's important to you: https://photographylife.com/nikon-d600-vs-d700

d600: < $800 (most seem to be going in the $740 range)

d700: with grip, they seem to be going for about $750, to as much as $900.

d800: about $900, with some as much as $1200 (that one includes grip and RRS plate)

Interestingly, there's a d3 available for $750 (!) and a d3s for $1,100, as well. Some real bargains on FF cameras out there if you're patient...and careful.

mmmm cool haven´t thought of fred miranda gonna check em out! D3s would be sick! :D

Thanks!

If your top is $800 the best you could hope for is a used D700. A used D600 or a used D3 in good condition will go for a bit more. Unfortunately your budget doesn't give you many options.

Cameras are much more like computers than the film cameras of yesterday. A D700 that was introduced in 2008 is an ancient camera by electronics standards. A D610 is a far better camera and it uses SD cards that cost half as much as the CF ones required with the D700 and the D610 has Live View which is very useful.

Best full frame camera for you at this time is the D750, new or used. The D750 was introduced in September of 2014 and is far more advanced in every aspect with far better autofocus performance, compatibility with all current lenses, tilt display, 24MP sensor providing 50% more resolution than a D700, much much better high ISO performance (usable ISO 3200 versus usable ISO 640), and dual SD card slots. A used D750 is selling for $600 on fredmiranda and is a heck of a value at that price.

Hi Calson, thans you got me thinking there and looked around but see d750 are going above $1000... will keep searching though! thanks again!
