Hi All,

I'm getting a camera for my wife this christmas and I can't decided what would be better between these 2.

The camera won't be for professional pictures or a hobby it will be used as a normal camera.

She wants to have a flip screen and be compact. She would be taking selfies with it, taking pictures when we go travelling around malaysia.

Im not sure if the M100 is suitable for this or not. If you could give me some insight into what one you think is best it would be greatly appreciated.

Also if you have any questions just ask!

Does your wife have any experience from photography? If not definitely get G7x! My wife loves my G7x because of the selfie screen, the easy zooming (vs the lens) and the picture style colors (portrait).

G7x sounds like it would fit the bill, though even with its flip screen and small size it is still much more cumbersome to shoot a selfie than with a cell phone.

On the plus side, you can use the Canon app for wifi shooting which can be great for travel (in places where it is safe to leave your camera unattended). We got some nice shots with the g7x and a very basic compact tripod on a recent trip which lets you be part of the scenery-

Nice photos and amazing scenary! Thanks for the info on the phone app.

She has no experience in photography so maybe the g7x 😁

Just wondering is there really much of a difference for an amature between the two as both have flip screen, selfie mode, manual mode etc. It seems looking at it that the m100 is a more powerful and slighty bigger version. Sorry the reason why I ask this is because I can get both for the same price and just want to be sure before I get it.

Thanks again!

Will your wife be changing lenses? The EF-M 11-22mm is a great wide angle zoom, and the EF-M 22mm is fantastic for indoor/low light photos.

If additional lenses are appealing, get the M100.

If she will only stick with one lens, then the G7X II is an all-around better option.

How much video do you guys intend to use? Would you rather have something simple and pocketable, or something small/light, but can change lenses on?

I ask as the M100 has DPAF which has more "solid" video AF vs the G7X II uses contrast detection AF so it's a bit jerky, but overall still excellent. It can take lenses too, the wonderful 22mm f/2 STM, 11-22 f/4-5.6 IS STM come to mind, they're small, but have teeth. Also the 18-150 is another interesting lens. Aside from the 22 pancake though, the 11-22 or 18-150 will make the M100 not pocketable though, heads up.

The G7X II is smaller, and single lens solution; it's more "simple" in that it's 24-100 reach is good for all around usage and fits in most pockets.

You're headed in the right direction as the G7X II and M100 are some of the strongest offerings Canon has right now for small compact offerings, that have teeth (and are reasonably priced).

If cost is of no concern, the new G1X III, is a hybrid of both offering the 24MP DPAF APS-C sensor of the M100, and, a fixed 24-70 lens with similar equivalence to the G7X II. It's just expensive and also can't take lenses. For most people, as I said, I'd do either the G7X II or M100.

Cost is a factor and these are the top end of my budget unfortunately. Thanks for all your help I'm going to try and find the m100 in the shop but if not I might go safe and go for the g7x as she would probably stick with the standard lens tbh.

Thanks for all your help!

No problem. I agree, the G7X II is "safer".

Oh, don't forget, you can layer Canon discounts with beneplace/other 3rd party benefit brokers for your company discount (if you have one), with Canon direct sales. It nets another couple % off the already sale price.

You might also consider waiting till BF/CM on the G7X II; it's price could go cheaper, truth told it's not that cheap at the moment.

I have both m43 and 1” sensor cameras and I can assure you that all 1” cameras are capable of very good results. If you are not bored check my Flickr account.

G7XII: fits in pocket

M100: interchangeable lenses

These are probably the most important differences.

How much better do you think the image quality of M43 is over the 1" sensors that are in the newest cameras today?

I just used the G7xM2 on my trip to Sicily. It was really easy to use, small enough to keep in my shoulder bag or let it just hang from a neoprene aftermarket wrist strap.

It took some great photos.

You must charge it every night and/or carry a spare battery to be sure.

I think that unless you are planning to change lenses, or have some special needs, the G7X will get some great shots. And a novice can use the auto modes and won't need to obsess about settings.

I would definitely get the G7XII for you or your wife. It offers the same IQ as the M100 + kitlens in a smaller package. So why hesitate?
