DMW-TC14 1.4x Teleconverter

no way is the 1.4 t/c going to work with the 100-400mm and by the looks of it not compatible with oly t/c compatible lenses the panasonic t/c has a extra pin which kind of means it will work with just the 200mm f2.8 at the moment but great news for future lenses for m43 perhaps the 50-200mm will accommodate the t/c ,

I got lost in the excitement of the G9 announcement and paid almost no attention to the new lens announcement with a 1.4x teleconverter included. After I finally read the lens announcement this morning, I saw the teleconverter was a separate piece of equipment and not part of the lens, as Canon did with one of its lenses, I think. I looked at B&H and saw that indeed the DMW-TC14 1.4x Teleconverter is a item to be ordered separately from the 200 mm. I immediately got excited for this teleconverter and imagined it on other pany lenses. But as I read through the write-up, it appears that this teleconverter only works on the new 200 mm lens. Do I have that correct?
Yes.

It is physically impossible to use it with other lenses, because it protrudes and requires the lens to have space to accommodate it.
And if so, why would Panasonic make a teleconverter that only works on one lens?
Yes they would. They did it for just one lens.

But then, there could be more compatible lenses coming in the future.
You look at DSLR mounts for example and most teleconverter compatible lenses tend to be professional telephoto lenses which is an era that m43 hasn't really focused on much.

I'm guessing that a large part of why this lens is the size/price it is comes down to it being designed to produced image quality not only sufficient for its native use but also to provide excellent performance when using a TC.

I would add that lenses like this and Olympus 300 are also being designed to handle future, higher density sensors. I think that was the idea of the G series for Sony, bigger and more expensive but also somewhat future proof.

If you don't get older and wiser, than you just get older.
The G lenses to me seem pretty inline(obviously the most recent releases tend to lead quality wise) with Canon and Nikon's regular pro lenses, those companies pro tele primes on the other hand push performance to a significantly higher level. Again I think the reason is that not only are they future proofed but there also designed to be used to a TC and still have excellent image quality.

They've said there will be a firmware update for the GH5, but I would hope that's to optimise performance with the new 200, rather than that the lens won't function at all otherwise. I'm curious to see if the 2x converter can be made to work with the 40-150 f2.8; if the extra pin is a problem it might be removable(?), depending on whether it's physical or electronic and what it does. Still, until the TCs get out into the field we're all just guessing.

From the pictures it seems very very simillar to the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 1.4x Teleconverter MC-14.

Does anyone happen to know if those are the same TC, but sold by either Panasonic or Olympus under different names?

E.g. would the Olympus MC-14 fit on the Panasonic 200mm f/2.8?

No. Different TCs under their brand names.

See these two posts.

It would be nice if Pany designed teleconverters to go with their current lenses, such as the 100-400. It would be great to have a tc for that, like I do for my Canon 100-400.
I disagree. The lens would be far too slow with even the1.4x converter. Something like f7 even at the 100mm end. Lenses in the f2.8 to f4 range would lend themselves well to teleconveters. Anything above that in m43 would be pointless.
Nonsense, you've clearly not used high end teleconverters on high end lenses on high end bodies. The OMD-EM1 (not even the Mark II) can AF just fine at f/11.

High end Canon bodies can AF at f/22. Wildlife photographers will stack two 2X converters on the 800 f/5.6 L lens. Go check back issues of Outdoor Photographer.

I think you will find that when they say "too slow" they are not actually talking about AF speed. I tend to agree with them and yes, I am used to high end TC's. I've just finished stacking 2 TC's on m4/3 with a 300 F/2.8L and 500 F/4.5L lens, that doesn't make the images any better though ;-) I've still yet to try them on the 800 F/5.6L. Maybe this weekend if it's fine.

All the best.

Danny.

Nonsense, you clearly have no experience using teleconverters with long/slow lenses. My OM-D E-M1 focuses just fine at F/11 and I'd be surprised if the newer bodies didn't handle f/16.

Jumping in to help on the forum is only useful if you have some experience with the topic, otherwise, read and learn.
