Hi:

I've been on the 200D-800D forum for my XSi kit for years, but just got a G9x for a "walking around" camera. I'm having a problem connecting it to Wifi

I go through all the steps in the book, it connects, shows up on my computer (Win 7 using the Verizon modem/wireless router), the driver loads, and all seems ready. But before I can download any pictures, a little flag pops up saying the camera has disconnected and the Canon software is shutting down. There's nothing in the FAQ's that addresses this

Anybody have any clues out there?

Stu

Why not plug in a USB cable if there is a port on the computer? Why people battle with the horrors of WIFI unless absolutely necessary is a bit of a mystery to me.

Apologies for not being very helpful. I find WIFI connection is an arbitrary and random process with no specific behaviour pattern. Sometimes the computer and gadget just do not like each other :(

I've seen from cruising the forums that I'm not alone having problems with Canon wifi. But using the same router/access point at home, we've had no problems with other devices sending documents, huge zip files full of photos, etc. I know the channel my AP is on is not busy in my neighborhood. And at work all our laptops are on Wifi, and there's rarely any problem with the massive amounts of data flying around there.

So I was just wondering if anyone has had similar issues with Canon, and if there was a solution. Maybe there's something funny in their wifi implementation that can be cured or bypassed.

And if you have ever tried opening that little door over the USB connector on a G9X, you would understand why I was really hoping WiFi would work.

Better yet, why not pop the card out and use a card reader? Faster and far more reliable.

Card reader, USB, all true, of course. But if you bought a new car and the AM portion of the radio didn't work well, or at all, you could also say that it doesn't matter because you have FM, satellite, bluetooth or USB from another device, etc. But wouldn't you hope that such a problem could be sorted out, just in case you ever wanted to use AM? I would, but I'm an engineer, so I think that way...

No Wifi fix from me . I am a wire in everything possible type. Just a questune. Are you the Stu Brennan formerly from Arbutus Ridge?

If you are an engineer you are probably a step ahead of us anyhow. WIFI is peripheral really and I would not even think of rejecting a good camera because it did not have it.

Do you really need it or are you trying to get it to work on principle? The old sneaker net philosophy may be relevant here. I remember a talk many years ago when PCs first came out when they showed that saving data to a floppy disk and walking across the room to the other computer was quicker than sending it through the networks of the time.

It is always a relieve to me when each Canon comes out with no 4K as it spares us the video mob moving in with their codecs and PC graphic cards and IT performance issues in general and camera sounds also. I remember a long thread in the Panasonic forum where everyone was repeatedly telling the OP that 5 axis stabilisation on the sensor of what is listed as a a stills camera was making the hum and it never really seemed to get through to him.

Microsoft themselves are pulling extended support for Windows 7 at the start of 2020 and I have Windows 10 so all I could advise is a systems upgrade.

WIFI is flaky and I have a 5Gig channel on my router and absolutely nothing will latch on to it. You just have to work these problems when it is worth it and know when to walk away when there is no point. I just use 2.4 Gig no problem.

If there is an AM station I want to listen to, the only way to get it is to have the AM receiving properly so I'd go back to the dealer and get it fixed.

However, to transfer photos from the camera to desktop there are several ways. You're trying to make it work with the slowest & most unreliable method. Unless there's a need to do a wireless transfer, it's not even something I'd give a second thought to.

Are you using the Canon ImageTransferUtility ? That's what I'm using with all my cameras (except the Sony of course). I had to register the cameras on Canon Image Gateway first, though. I'm not sure if it works with G9x (I have the mark 2). I posted a thread about this some time ago. I will see if I can find it.

Btw. I'm on a Mac.

Here it is. Maybe some tips for you there.

Are you connecting to your router/app or are you advertising the cameras WiFi app and connecting direct?

Ive found the former is hit and miss, the latter is spot on.

The cameras WiFi has a weak antenna; try moving within 10 ft with line of sight between the camera and the router. The distance between your router and laptop shouldn’t matter though.

I believe the camera uses weaker encryption too so you could try wpa (1) and a simpler password on a guest setup a MAC lock it due to the reduced security posture.

I'm connecting via the the wireless router, not direct. The camera was about 2 feet from the router/AP, so signal strength should not be a problem. My analyzer says there is no interference from neighbors on that channel. Laptops from the furthest point in the house have no connectivity issues.

As I said, the camera connects, the little menu pops up on the PC screen, but when I select the download method, it says the camera disconnected.

I guess that little door over the USB connector isn't THAT bad to fiddle with, all things considered...

Whats your router say out of curiosity? Client connected, or no? It'll ID as a Canon device, at least Canon gets that right under the MAC list. Just lookup your gateway; NCPA.CPL, properties on your adapter, IPv4, gateway. Input the IP in your browser to get to your WIFI router/AP. Should be a network list of attached/WiFi connected devices.

Just trying to pin down if it's network or software.

Oh, important, is your router running WPA2?

Last thought, try moving it to between 5-10 ft from the wifi; 2 ft is problematic, too close. Many Wifi's have "dead space" very close to the router itself.

I'm betting it's a software issue though, despite my network advice as your PC is telling you the connection is getting reset, which means it thinks it was there. It probably still is there truth told and your computer is likely resetting the socket (or more likely dropping the connection on the software handling, so it's akin to "socket drop" even though it's probably a literal buffer overflow etc etc).

Goes without saying, make sure you're using the latest Canon software.

Also; if you haven't already, it may be worthwhile to try a point-to-point WiFi, that is, connecting directly to your camera's wifi vs your router, which will knock you off your internet during the session, and verify you can connect direct. While you're at it, check the camera's Wifi "defaults", it's probably WPA with a simple 8 character passphrase. I don't have a Canon at the moment to test myself (for another 3 weeks or so), but I'd try mimicking the Wifi setup the camera projects itself on your own wifi, say on a guest channel as I mentioned before. If you can't connect point-to-point, which I've had no issues to at least from my iPhone in the past, that would be a dead giveaway something on your computer is afoot, like that Canon software, security settings IE your computer might be ID'ing that connection as untrusted, etc etc.
