Just got a 10D and am putting it through the paces, including checking compatibility with my existing equipment.

It doesn't seem to work well with my Sunpak 5000AF flash. While the camera and flash talk to each other regarding zoom, aperture, and ISO settings, the TTL mode on the flash doesn't work. The flash fires about two seconds after the picture is taken. Also, the camera doesn't limit itself to the fastest sync speed, like my 1v did.

Am I doing something incorrectly? Or will I have to bite the bullent and get a Canon flash?

The Sunpak PZ5000AF is a good flash but I believe I read someplace that it was not compatible with the 10D. In fact I think there may be a voltage incompatibility that could result in you damaging your 10D using it. I advise you to check the voltage capabilites of the 10D versus the Sunpak before using it further. I was going to use my Sunpak until I discovered the problem. It is not worth damaging your 10D to use it without checking it out thoroughly. There are some voltage regulators that can be attached to the flash to compensate for the differences if you want to use it but it still will not function in TTL with the 10D.

Everything is correct, it is the way it works! Remember that 5000AF does not support E-TTL and 10d does not support TTL, so the best way what I use this flash is in Auto mode on flash and Av mode in 10d (eventually both manual). If you do some excercise and gain some experience it is going to be really powerfull flash. Anyway do a search: "sunpak 5000" you get a lot of threads.

There is no voltage incompatibility that could result in you damaging your

10D using it. This flash is safe to use with 10d. Sunpak said that PZ5000AF is not compatible with 10d but in fact it works in Auto mode on flash and Av on camera (thyristor mode). Just do a search "sunpak 5000"

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, it seems to work fine in Auto mode. Just bummed that it doesn't work with TTL. That always worked like a champ with the EOS 1v.

Are all EOS digital cameras incompatible with TTL, or just the 10D?

Barry, I've e-mailed B&H for answers on this, since the Sunpak site is worse than one less as far as detailed specs. go, and after then doing some quick forum research I'll be very interested in their reply. I've just found this post quoting the distributor who admits straight out that it's severely hobbled with the 10D, and mentions there will be a new one coming later in the year. Wish I knew how much later :-(

i had the 5000AF, it worked fine with my eos 1N even in TTL mode but won't w the 10D ..i'm a little perturbed by that so i got rid of it and got the 420ex for size and full compatibility like hi speed and ettl...the auto mode can suffice in most cases but there are times when ttl is convenient to have...i'm also concerned about the incompatible voltage some may have experienced that may destroy ur 10D...so better be safe than sorry ...cheers

It will not work in TTL mode, but itl works great in auto mode. The best setting IMO is that set the 10D in M mode and choose the desired aperture and shutter speed then set the Sunpak in auto mode and choose aperture and shutter speed accordingly.

Hope this helps.
