Since the update to the FZ1000 to allow photo mode when shooting 4k video I've been frustrated with the problem of wanting to pull stills from the standard 4k video mode because the stills were only saved in standard jpeg quality mode, So what to do, I had one of those duh slap your forehead kind of moments.

So you may be asking why does this matter just shoot in Photo mode, well if you're shooting in dim lighting conditions or you want to get a nice smooth motion in your videos it does. Remember the 4k photo mode set the shutter to quite a high number about 1000 of a second or higher and along with that comes a very high iso if you're shooting in lower light.

So if you want to shoot in 4k photo mode in dim lighting or get a smooth look to your videos and be able to pull high quality jpegs all you have to is go to shutter priority in photo mode and set the shutter speed to whatever you want so say set it to 60th of a second nice smooth video, low iso and high quality jpeg stills. Don't know why I didn't think of this a long time ago.

I'm hoping this helps someone else that's found this a frustrating problem.

Colin,

Thanks very much for the useful information. Are the JPG images actually stored with different compression within the video file in the two modes or is it the camera which extracts them differently?

Thanks

Hi Sherm, from what I can tell the jpeg that you pull from 4k is extracted differently in Photo mode vs. Video mode. All your doing is pulling a still from a 4k resolution video, Panasonic has decided (in all it's wisdom) that using the standard 4k video mode to extract still didn't give the best results so they lowered the jpeg quality to standard instead of high quality. I guess they figured people would complain their pictures were blurry.

Thanks, interesting discussion, I was about to ask about the differences between 4K Video and 4K Photo, as I have not gone far in either.

Is there a link to any good previous discussion of this area?

E.g. I don't know what method or software is most popular for extracting stills from either 4K Photo or 4K Video, and have not installed Photofun Studio, I thought it would be frivolous stuff.

Here you go. 4K Photo doesn't require photofunstudio

I viewed it with MPC-BE and extracted a frame at "100%" JPG quality
Don't know MBC-BE, is it better than MPC-HC for extracting? Is it free?
You should be able to take your 4k movies and extract individual frames at high quality at your desktop.

I no longer use PhotoFunStudio because it wanted to catalog all my pictures. To prevent that, I ended up configuring it to watch a single dedicated folder and putting individual mp4 files there for image extraction. It's only advantage may be the ability to read the EXIF in 4kPhoto files. I've not tested that feature with other software.
So what do you use now, please?

Weird the way 4K Photo goes to high ISO for no reason, a basic error, it is supposed to be about IQ.

One daft question cos I am getting a bit confused - in 4K Movie, I just want to set f4 like in A mode, and the ISO, can I do this? I've read so much stuff that I need to grab one method and use it. I don't want something using f2.8, it is simply worse.

And what do you use for extracting from 4K Movie, and can you choose JPG quality, or is it automatically top quality?

Thanks,

Mike

I'm no expert but I think they're variants of the same program. Both free. Lots of comparisons if you search MPC-BE vs HC. Seems to be mostly a difference in interface.

Either should work fine

Haven't done much with any of them. MPC, Pot Player, VNC are free and competent. See what you like best

4K photo in P mode sets a faster shutter speed so ISO must increase

In 4k photo and 4k video mode you should be able to set the exposure mode to any of P-A-S-M. Choose A mode and set aperture to 4 if you want to. You'll probably get a different illumination vs shutter speed vs ISO relationship in 4kphoto vs 4kvideo but that's your choice. You can always use M mode and auto ISO, or A mode and fixed ISO

something using f2.8, it is simply worse.

I've not done much. MPE can certainly save as TIF or as 100% JPG quality. Given the choice I'd of course choose the TIF
Thanks,

Mike

Thanks Sherm for both replies.

In my FZ330 I now have footage of me sailing my sailing coracle Ola in a nice breeze and lovely sunlight. I used 4K Movie in A mode at f4 and 100 ISO and left the camera with a (new) friend!

Just 15-40 second clips, it will be fun sorting them out.

I'll look at MPC-BE and the others you mentioned to see how big (MB) a JPG they give. MPC-HC gave me a good-sized JPG when I tried it recently.

Controlling IQ in A mode in 4K Movie, and it seems dead easy once set up, I probably shan't bother with 4K Photo. But I'll see.

Thanks again,

Mike

Yes, I have now extracted JPGs from the 4K Videos with the above settings and MPC-HC gave me 90% quality JPGs, 8 MP of course, and around 3 MB size.

Happy with that, shall look no further.

Thanks Sherm,

Mike
