Yup, been there. In fact it was exactly there at mir.com.my free trade zone that I was offered a black F2AS in mint condition. Small world?

Ah, but i'm in the third world and things are cheaper here. How much would you sell your F2AS in the first world? :)
I have one for sale mint in the box too, with all papers, but would
never let it go for that price ;)

I have owned an F2S and an F2SB, and consider the latter to be the best Japanese camera ever built. The SB was stollen a few years back, and I wanted to replace it. Mint F2SB's are generally over $1k. I bid on one on Ebay a while back, gave up at $1.2k, sold for $1.4k.

Is that your real name or you like bimmers like I do or is it just a coinsidence that 2 bimmermen think the F2 is the best japanese camera ever made?

Anyway, what's the diff between the F2AS and F2SB you've mentioned?

I deliver BMW's for a living, I work for Bavarian Motor Transport. I actually owned an F2S, F2SB, and F2AS. The F2S had a two diode readout, CDS meter, the F2SB had the diode readout with a better "silicon blue" meter. The F2AS was a F2SB with auto indexing, requiring AI lenses.
All great, smooth, well built cameras.

F2SB was also regarded by many Nikon fans and collectors alike as being one of the most collectible among all Pre-AI Nikon bodies. It is essentially a NON-AI Nikon F2AS Photomic because other than the AI-feature, the DP-3 is exactly the same unit as the AI-counterpart and has similar operational features and technical specifications as the DP-12

Must have something to do with owning an F2 or maybe it's owning a BMW. I guess one just goes with the other. In the '80's I was a photojournalist shooting for newspapers, using Nikon F2S and F2AS cameras everyday (sometimes that was 7-days a week) probably anywhere from 15-50 rolls a day all hauled around in a red '70 BMW 2002. If you folks saw the condition of those cameras when I was done with 'em it would probably bring you to tears. But remember, these were tools to capture images that would appear on todays front page and tomorrows fish wrap. Sprinting at full speed bodies banging together, standing in the rain, getting caught downwind of a wildfire, shooting in the desert, shooting at the beach, from a boat, a helicopter it didn't matter. I did what had to be done to get the shot. And those cameras never, and I mean never ever not once, failed to work-period. They lead a hard demanding life, having thousands of rolls put through them. Black finish rubbed to brass, scratched, dings and dents yet they all still worked when I finally sold them years after they'd been retired. If there's such a thing as a camera Hall of Fame the Nikon F2 deserves to be inducted. Also deserves to be on the top 10 most significant cameras list.

Oh yeah, the BMW 2002 has got to be one of the better cars ever made as well. Tons-of-fun to drive. Screwed together with typical German quality, ran like a Swiss watch-err, ran like a Leica.

Bill, did you work for the Philly area newspapers?

I was down at the BMW plant at Spartenburg, SC (X-5 and Z-4 made there) last year when they had a gathering for the 2002 owners. Quite a sight.

I bought a F3HP so I could retire my beloved F2sb, then had the F2sb stolen. Still hurts to think of it.

BimmerHauler,

I worked mostly in central and southern California. Would love to have made the 2002 gathering. Many, many great memories that combine F-2s and 2002s.

Wow! Maybe we should start a poll on how many people here previously owned a Nikon F2 also had a BMW 2002. Or even a 3.0CSL Batmobile for that matter.

I had a 2002tii which ran like the wind! The car was light years ahead of it's time! Ran circles around the ford escorts and Alfas of the time. A modern cliassic which even the later 320 could not out perform.

The other classic I own is the Nikon 35ti. Clad in titanium and built like a BMW.

Don't like the F3. It was not at all ground breaking when you consider the FM2 had better specifications like shutter speed and X-sync. The F2 was ground breaking for it's time, so was the F4 and F5. Hope the F6 won't disappoint.

I regard the F3 like the BMW 320 of the time. Tough as nails but otherwise unremarkable.

I don't care that much for the F3 myself, but I use it, and don't care if it gets banged around. Recently bought D100 and F100, interesting toys, but not close to the build quality of the F2. IMHO, the F2 build quality was as close as Nikon got to Leica.
