Has anyone use their Nikon 105/2.8 Macro on their D850?

If you were after a macro lens for a D850 today, what would you purchase?

There have been four distinct 105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkors - AI-S, AF, AF-D and AF-S. which one are you asking about?

I would probably stick with the AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8G Nikkor, but the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 VC gets great reviews too. In all honesty, it's hard to find a Macro lens that isn't at least very good!

Hi, sorry for the confusion. I meant the latest one that's available for purchase new (though from reading that is getting on in years).

Zeiss 100mm f2 would be my choice but only half life size, Tamron has better reviews than Nikon, I have Sigma OS 105mm and 180mm, both better than the Nikon 105VR I had.

Mike.

Most of the macros today are good. if I was to start over today I would go with the Tamron 90 or Sigma 105 or Sigma 150. I have the original Nikon 105 VR when it was made in Japan. Now they are made in China which shouldn't make any difference but I never heard complaints about it until they moved the manufacturing facility. i also have the Sigma 150 and I am hard pressed to tell the results of which macro I used except the exif gives it away. Here are shots from a D500 recently at a rain forest exhibit. Shooting through glass is always a challenge.

Cheers for the replies.

I have the Nikkor 105mm 2.8. I tried to do an AF fine tune with it on my 850 but for some reason the camera was giving me a failure message.

Ok with two other lenses I tried.

..even though not the 105mm f/2.8 micro, but there's a blog about a photographer using the 60mm f/2.8 micro with his D850.. can read more -> here ..

..Best wishes..

My experience with D850 + Tamron SP 90 (the latest version) has not been that good (If one wants to use AF).

* It hunts a lot on D850 compared to D7000

* There is almost a constant hum with VC

* Once AF just did not work on D850. I had to switch off, remove battery, change over to a Nikon lens and then switch back to Tamron for it to work.

I have the 60mm f/2.8 AF-D, the 105mm f/2.8 VR-G and the 200mm f/4 AF-D. I use all lenses in FX and DX.

The one I use most is the 200mm. In macro, most of times, you need reach. Especially when shooting dangerous animals... or the shy ones.

So, if I go to shoot with only 1 lens, I pick up the longest one.

Good to know. Have a couple of questions. When did you get the Tamron? Do you have the Tap in and have you checked to see if there was a firmware update? I do not have the Tamron because my 2 macros have me covered. if it has the latest firmware and is not working then either a defective lens or Tamron hasn't gotten it figured out yet for the D850. Until I hear further I will be removing my recommendation for that lens for the D850.

I have the 105vr and the 60 micro. Bought the 60 entirely for underwater use (D810 in housing) because I felt I was missing so many 'normal' shots with the 105 being too long.

Use the 60 for one dive and never again. 105 is barely long enough for macro underwater (tough to get close, tougher to do it with strobes in a good place), but with the 60 I was almost touching my macro subjects. And it wasn't wide enough for my normal shots anyway.

I agree with you - with macro, the longer the better.

Unless I've missed it, another consideration that hasn't been mentioned with macro and the D850 is that "focus shift" (yes, dumb name) seems to work only with Nikon lenses. I am not an enthusiast of the current Nikon 105mm f/2.8 macro, but once I get a D850 (when, oh when?) and confirm the my Sigma macros don't work with focus shift, I may have to get the Nikon.

Ooo, which one? (AI-S, AF, AF-D, or AF-S. And thanks to Brian for mentioning the different models.)

I don't have the D850 yet, but I do have the AF-S 105mm f2.8 G.

What is the specific failure mentioned (text message or error code)? The hive mind might be able to work together to figure out why.

Seems is the right word. Lots of misinformation goes around about D850.

I just tried focus shift using my old Sigma 150 apo macro (not the OS one) and works quite well , it needs bigger steps than nikon 60mm but it moves.

Bravo! Hurray! Thanks!

I got the Tamron around 6months back. And I dont have the console. Tamron might have fixed it or might fix it. I am planning on getting Tamron 24-70 G2 next quarter and looking for feedback from people who use it with D850. Will get lens + console or just the console then.

This is not a very major thing for me as I mostly use D7000 for macros and Tamron SP 90 is an awesome lens.

It's the 2.8 G ED. I have tried the AF fine tune again and it's ok now. I think I may have had the camera too far away from the target??

Or perhaps not enough light? I understand the fine-tune process requires ample light.
