DPR has front-paged the new Pro 1.2 primes

Not saying where I took these, to prevent getting anyone in trouble. :)

The lens felt great, very much like the 25/1.2, and had the same special look even through the VF. The only thing I didn't like was the release button on the hood, which was recessed and difficult to locate by feel. I am looking forward to trying the 17!

I seriously can't imagine there are enough buyers at these prices. The market would seem to be people that have a lot of money to spend, want thin DOF, want to shoot in low light, want the best photo quality, but have never heard of full frame?
The Olympus 300mm f4 and 25mm f1.2 have been out for enough time for Olympus to judge the market and they still released these two new lenses, so they must believe there is a market. Olympus must believe there are enough Olympus/Panasonic mFTs users who don't want a second system, but want fast lenses of these focal lengths.

I will take my Oly 12-40 F2.8 over these 3, save a ton of space, $, and the sharpness difference will be unnoticeable. How about that ? ; ) What would have been a major winner would have a 300-500mm pro zoom lens.

The worst picture is the one not taken.
These lenses are 2 1/2 stops "faster" and shallower in depth of sharp focus. Their bockay is also significantly better. This enables types and qualities of especially portraiture that the 12-40 could not match,

These lenses are professional-level tools, and apparently very good ones. For those who really need them on a regular basis, the price is quite reasonable.

Olympus built its reputation during the 35mm days in being able to come up with lenses that had other manufacturers asking how they managed to do that. It's not about the size of the camera sensor, but the size of the lens aperture and its optical performance.

How do you manage to sneak that past your other half? I suppose that the one thing I can think of is that because these lenses look all the same size, it won't look suspicious if you only put one into view at any one time.

  • Great point! All my bodies and lenses are black, they look identical to my dear wife, which avoided some unnecessary discussions...

One benefit to having a spouse who cares not one shred about photography and cameras is that most of the stuff looks identical, one reason I've avoided "special edition" colors and such. So many conversations avoided.

Specialty lenses at extra-specialty prices, but I suspect they'll appeal similarly to the the 25 Pro and Nocticron. I could maybe kinda see a place in my bag for the 17 as a very fast wide-normal prime. None of my zooms crossing that length are remotely as fast and my primes bracket it by a huge gap. Need to see how it manages flare.

No, for those who have no need for FF. Not everyone wants to, or needs to hump around a kit that's twice as heavy.

I think these will sell.
If you don't have a need for FF, why do you need the fastest uber-primes on mFT? And the Pro lenses are definitely not light.
Why would you care what anyone does with their money or what equipment they want? Who cares if they don't need FF but buy other systems which had heavy lenses.
If all the people currently buying FF DSLRs not actually needing them would buy MFTs instead, the MFT prices would come down, and the lens availability would go up. So, yes, I do care :)

A little surprised how very similar they are in size and appearance.

Should I find myself owning all three I shall paint two of them to make them easier to identify. :-)

Should I find myself owning all three I shall paint myself the same colour as our curtains in an attempt to hide from the wife when she finds out!

Credit to whoever said that first and to my wife for saying it to me.

Couldn't agree more

Believe it or not some people buy fast lenses of exceptional quality because they are fast and of exceptional quality.

Most of the time it is great to be able to shoot a lens wide open for better light gathering and still get decent depth of field.

Same prices too. At least the two new ones. My bet is one is underengineered and 1 is overpriced.

You got me thinking! So, with all the hype about the new Sony A7Rlll I decided to take a look at the cost to swap.

I got as far as replacing my E-M1.1 and my two 2.8 zooms with the Sony and the two 2.8 zooms. That would cost me about £5500 assuming someone was happy to give me what I paid new for my stuff. Might be lucky, no brick wall testing needed, no de-centred lenses, good copies......better than new really!

Or......I could, instead buy all three of these Pro primes and almost the 300 as well!

Yes, yes, yes.........

Would love to have the 17mm for general street photography... But at that size I think I'll get the Oly instead... Actually, now that I have the PL 15mm I think I'm good...

For those that don't mind the size (or weight), the lens looks superb. Looks like it's a great lens.

I believe that Olympus tries to offer a complete set of lenses for various applications. It is a different question if you start from scratch and just need a fast 35mm lens (can include 50mm and 85mm as well) - i think in this case you have to consider Sony as an option.

When i bought into m43 i knew that i would walk around with the camera and a few lenses - whether sightseeing in a city or out in nature. So i started with 12-40/2.8, the 60mm macro, and the 17/1.8. And then added 40-150/2.8 and last the 300/4.

I am not sure if i will buy any of the wide to short tele pro primes but if i needed one i surely am glad that they are offered.
