Hi Sigma SD9 users:

I'm in the market for a new DSLR...I love the quality of pictures with this camera, but I only have one problem with this camera...I just wish this camera would do JPEG images!!! Does anybody know if JPEG can be converted easily with this camera's software? I do weddings and I need to convert 200-300 pixs all at once to JPEG....My photo lab web-site only works with JPEG images...I know, get another photo lab, but I'm invested with this lab already.

Thanks,
Werner

Sigma PhotoPro allows you to batch save the images to JPEG and TIF, both 8-bit and 16-bit, with different embedded color profiles, too, I think. Easy isn't the word!

Get the camera - you won't be disappointed, trust us...

Thanks Guys...I think this was the final point to not buying a 10D. I'll be placing my order for this camera this weekend....as soon as I decide on which lens.

Thanks again.

Yes, you can batch process all selected files to JPEG using the supplied SPP software. Takes about 2-3 secs per pic with my 2GHz laptop.

But...

After using SPP you won't want to batch process in bulk, as the control it allows per pic is something you'll have to experience to appreciate if you are used to working directly with JPEG output.

Suggestion: Go to http://www.sigma-photo.com and download/install SPP to see exactly how it works. Sample SD-9 RAW files have been gratiously provided by Kendall...

No need to buy the camera to fully explore its quality and SPP.

Sounds like the perfect zoom, with the 1.7 factor it will be around 40 to 120. Perfect focal lenth. Is it fast enough for sports?
Thanks again.

In addition to Kendall's X3F samples, Sigma now has some X3Fs on their site for downloading (several of the same files that they send out on their free CD available on request). http://www.sigmaphoto.com

I wish more people would try out the software and these files. I was very quickly sold on the SD9 after playing around with them.

I'll download and check it out.

I am a pro wedding photographer who bought my SD9 earlier this week.

Yesterday as a test I shot off 70 images using "auto wb" at a venue I visit regularly. Came home, turned on the computer, and Sigma Photo Pro, selected "save images as" -"all images"- "auto" - "JPEG" came back later saved jpg's on a CD. Now how easy is that!!!

You can always go back and readjust the odd few that require it.

I would say it saves me about six hours work on 300 images and the results are superb.

Roger, I recommend that you save both your X3F and your JPEGs to a CD. If you put your JPEGs into a directory titled 'PICTURES' and burn to ISO9660 format, many new stand-alone DVD players will recognize this disc as a Kodak Picture CD format and will play the JPEGs on a TV. I also create a contact sheet with thumbnails of all the files on the CD and size it to fit a standard DVD style case. PhotoShop has a great automatic contact sheet creator. Works great for organizing your archives. If I am creating one of these archive CDs in a DVD case for a client, I'll often print a nice 5x7 and put it inside the DVD case in the clips on the left side. When they open the case, they are greeted with a pleasant surprise.

You can batch process everything in one shot using the default camera settings or let SPP configure automatic setting for each photo. I have really good luck with auto processing. I usually go back and reprocess 5-10% by hand that don't work out. From there I run an action that is almost automatic to correct color etc. One really nice thing is you dont need to sharpen in PS. Another nice thing is if your clients want any big enlargements, you still have the raw file to go back to. Its really not that much more work, except for maybe the S2 that spits out very consistantly good color balanced photos. I have also been shooting a 10D and I spend more time trying to sharpen those images than I do processing my SD9 photos. The SD9 is pretty cheap now and if you dont need to shoot over iso100 you are set.

I'd say ISO 400 is very comparable to 10D images I've seen, maybe on average better in the case of the SD-9. The thing is, you can't use ISO 400 on the camera, you have to use ISO 100 -2EV and push back +2EV in SPP. Plus the Sd-9 images aren't blurry, which leaves a lot of lattitude for third party NR to produce a comparable to better final product.

The 10D ISO 800 images on dpreview are quite noisy and very blurry, if you are willing to accept that level of blur, I think the SD-9 can do equally well, if not better, from ISO 200 - + 2EV with good third party NR applied.

Thanks for the info Lawrence. To keep the post short I didn't add that I will also save the X3F files so when the client orders I can go back and produce tiffs to print off.
