I currently have the 28-80L and 80-200L zooms. I am deciding between the 17-40L zoom and the 20mm 2.8 prime (by the way, here is a comparison if anyone is interested: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=0055CB ).

If carrying the 17-40L with my existing lenses is ridiculous, than the 20mm prime becomes more attractive an option.

Does anyone carry around three zooms of this size in one bag? I was thinking of getting a Lowepro backpack and don't know how easy or burdensome this would be.

Thanks,

Peter

I carry the 70-200/2.8 IS and 24-70/2.8 and 16-35/2.8 in one bag. That's with two 1D bodies (attached to the two longer lenses).

Which bag?

The Domke J-1

Is it heavy? You bet!

I tried carrying the 16-35L, 70-200L IS and 100-400L, but it's too heavy for me. I usually carry the 16-35L, 28-135 IS and one L tele-zoom.

BTW I switched from a Canon 20mm f2.8 to a 16-35 L last year. There was no 17-40L existing at that time, otherwise I would have it now. In spite of all the complaints about the 16-35L, I prefer it to the 20 prime. (Zooming and more vivid colours, and I would probably get only peanuts for a 16-35 L f2.8 now that the 17-40L f4.0 is so popular, IMHO)

I use a Micro Trekker 200 with the following lenses:
Canon 17-40L
Canon 28-135IS
Sigma 100-300 EX APO IF HSM
Canon 100 macro

Still room for a 550EX and various accessories.

Why leave a lens at home if you may need it, otherwise I just take the 28-135IS in a Lowepro EX 140.

I have a Lowepro Mini Trekker. I don't make it a habit to carry all this, but I have carried the 16-35, 28-135, 70-200, and 100-400 at the same time. I was still able to squeeze in 2 bodies.

The 28-135 isn't an L -- so it can only count as half an L lens. LOL.

FWIW, I have also carried this setup in my Domke J-1

two 1D bodies
24/1.4
35/1.4
50/1.4 (1/2 an L -- LOL)
85/1.2
135/2
1.4x TC

Oh No! I guess I am actually only carrying one lens! LOL

Sigma 15-30

Among others...

Well, he asked how many L-zooms one carried.

Let's see. A non-L zoom counts as 1/2 an L-zoom.

So, an L-prime should maybe be 3/4 of an L-zoom, and a non-L prime should be 3/8 of an L-zoom?

I do, 24-70L, 70-200L 2.8 IS, 100-400L with 2 x 10D+Big Ed. Oh, and also a 550EX and TC's. It is worth at least 4 hours in the gymn for every 1 hour carried. All fits into a Tamrac Super Pro 14.

Not recommended unless you absolutely have to or masochism is on your hobby list.

If you really want to know what I shoot with - look under my profile.

LowePro PhotoTrekker:

1Ds
16-35L
24-70L
70-200L
180 macro
24/1.4L
550 EX
MT-EX 24
1.4 + 2.0x TC
Two ETs
15mm fisheye
Extra batteries
PowerBook G4 15"

From that, I usually pick whatever I need at the minute and carry it either in my hand, or if it's more than just the body & lens, I carry it with the LowePro S&F harness & deluxe belt. Looks dorky but it sure as hell is nice!

70-200 IS, 28-70 and 17-40. Plus a 24-85 for wifey (I should make her carry that!). Plus flash, 1.4x TC, 500d, Big Ed, leads, rechargers, and a camcorder. It made for an offensively heavy bag.

In fact, I just packed the bag to get through the airport. Once I get to my destination, I tend to take out just the stuff I think I'll need. If it's not enough, too bad for me.

I have a LowePro Trim Trekker and can fit the following at the same time: Canon 70-200 IS, 100-400 IS , 17-40 and a 1.4 TC. Also a Canon 10D with the Grip plus an extra BP battery and 4 compact flash. The bag will also fit an image bank with external battery carrier and a Canon 440 EX flash.

I went to the zoo one day carrying all the above stuff for 6 hours! It was a bit heavy but I had no difficulty carrying the bag with the equiptment inside it.

Here is a picture of my LowePro Photo Trekker. And for me, it is prohibitively heavy. I use it to haul the equipment to the site, but once there it stays put (hopefully within sight :-) I cannot shoot with it strapped to my back. "What a drag it is, getting old." ;-)

I use three common Canon zoom lenses: 17-35mm & 28-70mm & 70-200mm, plus a 1.4X, a 85mm prime, a 420EX flash, and miscellaneous equipment. The 28-70mm stays on the camera, as it is my most frequently used lens.

If so, do you like it? Do the features (special zipper) that keep it dry become an inconvenience?

I think there's a guy there who has one. It may be Ben Horne.
