Does the 18-55 kit lens have a sharpenss problem?

Hi Mapline

Is it possible for you to upload 24 MP image has 6,000 × 4,000 size ?

Thank

Hi Rainydiary

Attach 4 photo all with OIS as requested. f4 and 8 at 18mm and 55mm. Focus on nose.

Hope they help

Since buying my first Fuji last year, I've only used this lens and I can say it is excellent. I've not had any problems at all. In fact I would say it's close to being just as sharp or the same as my Canon 24-70mm L.
I found the same. I have no issues using that lens on a regular basis.

My experiments also show that the unreliable focusing and unstable IOS at longer distances to the subject and shorter shutter speeds play a significant role with soft images coming from the kit lens. The second is especially puzzling, because they could fix it easily in firmware by disabling IOS completely at higher than normal shutter speeds and at longer distances.
BTW I experienced issues with the OIS at shutter speeds higher than 1/250s as well. The whole image looks a little blurry in a high percentage of shots. Haven't seen this problem with my other Fuji lenses. As a rule now, I only turn the OIS on if I'm shooting with a show shutter speed.

Hi rainydiary

Thought I would add an 18mm at f2.8 and again I am happy with results. Again focus on nose.

I think im going to try this. my last lot of landscape photos with this lens just didnt really meet my expectations to the point i think sony kit lens is better.. short distance though im quite happy with it, weird.. more experimentation needed, might also try manual to pin this down.

Hi rainyday

Attach 2 landscapes at f5.7 and f8 as requested

Feel the lense is sharp and the resolution is great.

Zoom to 400% and on the horizon (rh) you can see some wind turbines which I think are out at sea.

I'm impressed with the lens as these are all hand held.

A guy called Omar who does a lot of XT20 tutorials with this kit lens mentioned in one of his many and interesting detailed videos that in some cases the green focus light came on and the focus area square turned green.but that the result was not quite in focus.

He turned the focus beep noise on and waited for the beep...then all his shots were in focus. The camera sometimes didnt focus beep even with a green light on .

Check him out good insights.

I find that's true with a bunch of lenses, especially wide angle; good focus at a short distance but not great at infinity, especially with landscapes, foliage.

I have mine for over 2 weeks now but I don't see any difference...maybe someone could or it is my eyesight?

Sold mine. Keeping the 16-50mm 3,5-5.6. Optical almost the same and much lighter :-D

OK, here's the problem and the solution:

At f3.2, you will have soft focus in either the background or foreground, or both, depending upon where you chose to focus. For landscape, your ideal aperture for in focus and depth of field would be between f5.6 and f7.1

Hi,

I bought a second hand 18-55 in a store but returned it because it was not sharp on one side. I later got the X-T1 plus kit lens and that one was fine.

It is still a kit lens - you can't expect prime like performance but uneven sharpness is clearly a sign of a faulty lens.

Undoubtedly there is going to be some lens-lens variation with any zoom, and decentering is an issue with all brands, but it also depends on how one is using the lens - ie. which FLs and apertures. A quick check today (JPEGs) with my 18-55mm (cityscape shots) shows some softness across the frame at 18mm / f2.8 (marginally more on the LHS), but looking good by f/5.6. Same at 23mm, but sharpening up again by f/4-5.6. At 35mm pretty good across all apertures, but only gets close to the 35mm f/1.4 prime at f/8. At 55mm looks fine at all available apertures.

So, in reality, if I don't shoot wide and wide-open at the same time, I have no real issues with my 18-55mm. If I shot at 18-23mm at the widest apertures most of the time, I'd probably post a similar thread to the OP, but probably shouldn't be using this lens anyway! So...that might also account for some of the difference of opinion here, on top of any unit variation present.

As a general purpose walk-around lens in daylight, I'm likely to be in the "sharp" range most of the time, as will many others.

PS - I didn't find OIS on/off made any difference on mine.

There are new firmwares for 18-55 und 10-24.

Maybe a solution for sharpness problems. Anyone testet the new FW for 18-55 already?

I thought so as well. A quick test did not reveal any improvement. In some cases at F5.6 and lower, my top right corner is soft. The weird thing is when I focus in that area the whole image is fine. So not decentered, but weird nonetheless. But at F8 it is all sharp, fine for fun shooting non critical. But would have loved a fix from the firmware update.
