It looks like a 'parts bin' lens using good bits from a number of otherwise not so good lenses. The end result might be good or might be rubbish. Not sure where they've got the 16 blade aperture from but it's not original.
Personally, I'd prefer a good original silver 44 which came with 'only' 13 blades. They're often available for about the same price

There are a number of different versions, much discussed on this forum in older posts.Yeah, I’m starting to see so many different kinds that I’m becoming is skeptical. I like the one I have and if it was as simple as just buying one in better condition I wouldn’t worry but now I’m afraid I may get a different lens altogether and I like the way the one I have performs.

I have a few versions but my favourite is an old beat-up and scratched silver 44 which just takes great photos.
If you like what you've already got then just enjoy it. Pretty cosmetics won't make any difference to your photos ;-)

A beaten up POS of an optically good lens will go places that one you're afraid of getting wet/dirty/stolen will. They're also less intimidating to have pointed at you. Arguably, lenses with good cosmetics will take fewer good photos than ones without :-DPretty cosmetics won't make any difference to your photos ;-)

I'm trying to think where they could have sourced a 16-blade aperture from - not that many lenses have that number although older Zeiss Jena Biotars (on which the Helios 44 is based) had 17 blades.I’ll Admit cosmetics was a factor originally but the greater number of blades is the key thought behind the upgrade now.

I wonder if they've somehow modified the original 8 blades mechanism by adding another 8 blades somehow.
The original 44 13 blade mechanism is nice enough. Originality matters more to me than cosmetics though ;-)

The nice thing about having a tatty lens that makes good pictures is that you can take it anywhere and you don't have to worry about it.
Having said that, it's nice to have a lens that works well mechanically even if the appearance is less than perfect.
Beyond about 8 blades they number of blades is hard to count just looking through the lens. I would not discount that a 16-blader exists but the information on the web suggests that 13-bladers were the original number which were (presumably) updated to 8-blades in later made versions.I’m leaning towards a 13 blade now

For those wondering, Retro Photo House posted a video on Youtube (from 18 Nov. 2016) of this very lens, though no mention if it is an original prototype, but mentions a modification he made to prevent mirrors on SLRs hitting the back. He posts a lot of great videos on restoring and maintaining old Russian lenses, such as how to disassemble, clean lenses and relube helicoid.Hi, I recently bought a Helios 44-2 and I’m really loving it but it’s not in the best condition. So I thought about upgrading it and while searching on eBay I found one in a silver like finish with 16 blades.
Any comments on this?
