Hi all,

I purchased an XT2 not long ago, and though I really like it, I have one issue that driving me nuts.

It's the lag from when I put my eye on the viewfinder until is turns on, it really bothers me to see blank for half a sec before I can see anything. it bothers me so much that I'm thinking of replacing it with the xpro2

How are you guys handling it? any workarounds? tricks?

Thanks,

Eli

Do you mean when you turn the camera on or when the eye sensor kicks in?

Or when it goes to sleep and you wake it by half pressing the shutter?

I find the eye sensor turns on before the camera gets to eye level and is no problem.

If that is your problem you could always set it to be always in EVF mode.

I mean when the eye sensor kick in, I put my eye and wait.

im in boost mode and the camera is brand new

also, if I put it in EVF only mode than I have to look at the EVF for everything which is tiring

any advice?

You can also set LCD and EVF on all the time - but this will use more battery power.

This is not normal - on my camera the eye sensor is very sensitive and activates before it’s even close to my face. I alaways use boost mode but no other special settings.

So you never see black EVF?

Agreed, this is not normal! I have mine Setup EVF ONLY + EYE Sensor and I never see this. The Eye Sensor is very very sensitive. By the time I have the camera at eye level EVF is ON and ready.

Yes - I sometimes find it too sensitive - when taking pictures using the LCD have to be careful nothing gets too close to the sensor - and it activates immediately - no delay

That's weird, I also tried another one in the store and it has the same delay

it's about half a second delay but it's annoying and make me aware of the camera

The delay is certainly there - people who claim that there's 0 delay with the transition from lcd to evf are either lying or simply don't know what lag/delay means.

Once the LCD is on and previewing an image, when I raise the camera to eye level - the lcd first turns off and only then the evf starts to show the preview, this takes about 0.2-0.5 seconds of blackout in the evf and it's quite annoying indeed.

This is a pure case of self created delays.....for me once the LCD is on with enabled EYE Sensor things become really annoying in the opposite way. Any movement that would create shadow over the eye sensor will switch off the LCD instantaneously...I am using X-Pro2 / X100F and cannot notice any delays as you described.

I don't "notice" a delay butthen again it isn't instant. However, I'm well used to mirrorless having left Nikon 6 + years ago. If you are fresh from a DSLR viewfinder you will most certainly notice a difference. Maybe we've got used to the very short delay and become inured to it.

There is indeed no delay on the Pro2, I am talking about the XT2

Same feeling at first.... toooo slow.

I set always EVF... or sometimes always LCD or sometimes always both... don't care about the battery, i've three of them in my pocket.

I don't own one but tried it once and the lag was certainly there. Any lag like that is too much for me as I shoot very quickly on the street. My conclusion is that with today's tech, EVFs won't work for my way of shooting. LCD always on is no options since battery life is crappy anyway. So, if/when upgrading from X-Pro1 it will an X-Pro2 which will be purchased! There you get the best of both worlds. Long may the OVF live!

Cheers,

Fred

One thing you could check, it worked on my X-T1 the one time I experienced more delay than usual:

Remove the rubber eyecup and clean the eye-sensor-surface.

Yes your cam is new, but that does not mean it is immune to foreign matter that may have gotten there for whatever reason (this could also have happened before purchase, e.g. during assembly, packing or other process)
The delay is certainly there - people who claim that there's 0 delay with the transition from lcd to evf are either lying or simply don't know what lag/delay means.
There is no need to imply people are liars or incapable if they do not experience the delay. That is quite disrespectful, and certainly does not help in keeping a positive and open conversation about OP's issue ;-)

There may be other factors at play, such as sample variation between cams (the X-T2 has not exactly shown to be immune to his, considering the many threads about a wide variety of problems), different tolerance of users, etc.

This has nothing to do with sample variations. That's the way it is, after testing three x-t2's. This might be improved via firmware update but I doubt that.

When I have mine set to switch from LCD to EVF via the eye sensor there is a short but perfectly workable delay. I’d say in the neighborhood of .2 sec sounds about right.

However, if I set the rear LCD to give the data display of the shooting settings then I get a much longer delay switching to the EVF, probably more like .5 sec. Not sure why that is but it’s very noticeably worse, so much so that I really don’t use that setting for the rear lcd even though I like it.

My XT10 does the same thing if we are talking about half a second but I had never noticed it before. My Olympus Stylus 1S and Canon G1X Mk II seem the same with a slight lag. EVF's just are not going to be the same as OVF's which do not have the job of showing what is actually happening in the image and are instant refresh. Being always on and doing absolutely nothing apart from framing does not take any time at all and I believe a lot of OVF's are less than 100% so even the framing is a bit suspect.

Probably transitioning from DSLR to Mirrorless is just more difficult for some than others.
