The Lousy Canon Strap

If you would like to switch between different kind of straps, why are you even messing with the Canon strap? There are strap "systems" out there designed to do what you want to do.

I switch between a sling strap and a wrist strap using 3rd party connectors.
I can't complain about crappy OEM stuff? BTW, I see most folks do actually use the Canon straps. Post a pic or links using the 3rd party connectors!
You can certainly complain about how the OEM stuff doesn't work for you. It does work for others (many in fact), and some people simply use something completely different. It's all good.
Can you honestly say that you can put on or remove the winding camera strap quickly on any Canon DSLR camera? It's impossible. That's the point of this thread.
Actually I can do it fairly quickly (having used Canon and others' neck straps since the 80's), but I don't. I don't like neck straps now, so I put a lot of thought into how I would like to hold my cameras and chose something different. You are free to do the same. The Canon lugs/straps work perfectly fine for those that like using only neck straps or only one type of strap, but not for those that want to keep changing it.

In the past I used a wrist strap, but that was when I used tiny film cameras. I use wide, comfortable third party straps nowadays.

I use a soft leather padded wrist strap all the time with the 100-400l II and other glass with my 5D4. It's a handy carry strap too. The big neck strap is a nuisance.
I hate neck straps, I tried out so many, but they had all the same effect, that I hated them, so like you I just have a wrist strap, have the camera for longer distanced between taking photos in a bag.......

Griddi........
Actually, Canon makes a very good neck strap that I got with the 5D4 as a bonus that is completely different in shape but still uses the same wrapping entanglement to attach to the camera. I'll post a pic of it later.
Thank you, but perhaps, as I am female, slightly build I think neck straps are just not for me :-D........

Griddi........
Maybe you can find another way to use it then? ;-)

But its so fiddly. Here's the Canon strap I'd recommend that stays put and is comfortable despite the stupid winding banding.

Canon neck strap. It actually feels comfortable.

But at least you can be confident it won't let you down. I've had one or two Lowepro bags whose shoulder straps have unexpectedly become disengaged, resulting in my gear making quite a disconcerting thump on the ground.

Better straps are out there, more secure and more comfortable. Buy a better strap.

If you want it detachable, buy a detachable one. They exist.

If you want a sling strap, buy a sling strap. They're great.

If you want a detachable hand strap, or system that converts between straps styles, they all are available.

These are called accessories. People research and buy them to fit their needs.

For $6, I have added semi-permanent rubber thingies that allow a carabiner to be attached. After 6 years, they show no sign of wear, but the camera body has some rubbing from the carabiner. Canon does things for a reason.

All things are possible to those who use the mighty Google.

What do you mean better?

It has been used for many decades and does its job of securing the camera.

If you want to complain, look at the compact camera straps. I have had a few that broke off and guess what happened to the camera. At best a few scratches and at worst lens error.

A working camera is better than a dead camera i say.

That was my point.

It isn't "Canon" it's the way manufacturers do it because it works for the general public better than other systems tried before.

Camera shops have thrived selling accessories for the exact reason that we don't all have the same needs or likes and I find it silly that some think their own particular want is what the OEMs should cater for.

Last night I was reading a quote from Winston Churchill about Democracy (essentially it isn't perfect but it's the best we have so far) it remained me of this.

Now if the thread had started with something like :

I sometime use a neck strap but at other times a wrist strap or nothing, the one that comes with my camera does not work for me, what would you suggest ?

then I would have offered a suggestion straight away without carrying on about generalities.

BTW, I don't use Canon, I would have said the same thing if a Pentax or Olympus (whatever) owner had started the thread.

Lanidrac, Thank you......next time I am out shopping, or perhaps better in town, I will see about the strap, but I don't have a canon camera at all anyway, although my Fuji X-T1 could use the strap as well I would imagine .......

To answer your observation directly , a weak part of a camera is the lag for the strap.

Because it protrudes from the body if you make it large enough to take a clip on (carabiner) type arrangement it will be too easy to damage itself and or the body part it is screwed in/ fused on. (banging, rubbing)

As they are you need to insert a ring or triangle but that also ends up putting a lot of stress on the base of the lug and often it is just an ugly awkward solution ending up in something like this :

b47e190f61c44541bf9dc220cf6cc35b.jpg

that could work perfectly well for some, not so much for others.

I'd say thanks, but I won't because you insulted me.
it was a case of misscomunication after several Canon bashing threads.

At home the other day :

my wife : it was miscommunication

Me : who is she ?

Hey man, what do you want? More dynamic range? Or a better strap? Your choice, can't have them both. R&D money can only support so many projects. :-)

I never had any problem with lags for the strap, but more problems to tread the straps onto the camera, it needs a lot of patience, and most often when I bought a new camera I asked the sales man to attach the straps for me..........

Also I never felt that these threaded straps were 100% secure, a salesman in a camera shop may know about the cameras and all other gear he is selling, but this don't mean necessary that he is photographer........

Why not both ? Perhaps people would be prepared to pay a bit more for perfection ........

Just for fun...

This is the quick release system Hasselblad had in the early days :

cbc3b830722d4c92b598da0ee04ae7c5.jpg

it slotted into the round lugs next to the wind on knob :

5f50d8a79a0543978ef1cb307faf2247.jpg

then they adopted the "Canon " way :

ee69610b03454719b00e5a0626f22c84.jpg

after having tried the round hole lug :

why did they drop the quick change ?

I wonder if other camera manufacturers do any differently, such as Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Fuji or Olympus. Would anyone care to comment?

Personally, I stopped using the Canon default strap long time ago. The Canon strap stays in the box untouched which can then be sold as a package. I use mostly OpTech straps for cameras and bags.
