Hi,

one feature caught my attention in the new Nikon d850, the silent mode.

I use to do some product and flash photography at home mostly in the night and the shutter of my Nikon D800 is definitely too loud for the neighbourhood.

Do you think the new silent mode can fix my problem?

Thanks.

I haven't tested it but probably doesn't work. Electornic shutters generally don't play nice with strobes, which is also why mirrorless cameras like the Sony A9 have to switch over to their mechanical shutter when using flash.

Thank you. But what is the technical issue with electronic shutters and flash photography?

I live in Switzerland, and one of the things I appreciate here is that the neighbourhood is very quite.

Maybe I am a bit over worried, but after midnight, when it gets quite enough, a shutter activation can be clearly heard. Besides that it annoys me in the first place.

Quite cheers from Zurich.

I'd worry more about snoring or flatulence bothering your neighbors.

Farting is not against condominium rules. First tests also confirm that it is below generally accepted noise level. Farting in silent mode is unfortunately not an option anyway.

Understandable. Farts under 10 decibels, also known as the "quiet and deadly", can cause a mass exodus.

Just work with a constant light source.
