Hi,

I've recently bought the Canon i950 and am very happy with the results, except on black and white photos which get a blueish tone.

I've profiled my monitor with spyder and this helped to get even better pictures on the printer (at least, more truethfull to what I was seeing in the monitor).

I am now thinking of profiling the printer and have two options:

get printfix from colorvision or

get qimage and profile prism

Have any of you had experience with both, and what is your feeling for the best approach?

Are the extra 200 USD that one pays for printfix really necessary?

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you are. However, I was getting a green tint rather than a blue on on my i950. I managed to find a workflow in Photoshop to push the images to more of a blue tint, and have decided I can live with it. The tint is subtle enough that you would only really notice when viewing next to a truly neutral print.

As far as profiling, I think it is a mistake to invest too much into a printer that is worth only $250. Sure, it produces nice color prints, but longevity is an issue. I balk at sinking as much into profiling gear as the printer, itself. Besides, the results from Printfix and Profile Prism are spotty, at best. If you insist on profiling, your money is better spent on a custom profile from Cathy or Drycreek.

Alternatively, if you do a lot of B&W printing, you might just consider buying one of the new HP printers with the grey cartridges. You won't be able to produce better B&W prints from any color inkjet printer. You should be able to pick up the HP for not much more than you would pay for Printfix.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with the scanner based approach. While some get okay results, it is hit or miss and a lot depends on your scanner.

I'd spend $50 and have drycreekphoto.com create a custom profile for you. It will be much more accurate and much more affordable than purchasing good equipment to do it yourself.

You will immediately see a benefit from your $50.

Good point... I would be spending as much money on the profile as on the printer ! Mind you that I live in Europe and here prices don't compare to USA but it would be similar...

thanks for the advise
