Hi all,

I am shooting with a Sony A7ii and am preparing for a trek in the Himalayas. I will be getting over 18,000ft and temperatures down to -10F.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with this camera at altitude and in these temperature ranges?

I have two Sony batteries and two aftermarket batteries for my vertical grip. I have heard the temperature may adversely affect my battery performance.

Any insight would be welcome!

Thanks

N.

Never been in those conditions so not much I can contribute. But you should look into means to EXTERNALLY POWER your camera, i.e carry the battery pack close to your body under your protective suit, then wired to your camera.

Altitude is not a problem for the camera, temperature is.

In very cold weather (am used to -25 to -30 C) it is sound to put the camera inside the coat (who does not use a big and roomy coat under such circumstances?) to avoid the most extreme cold. That will save batteries.

In my experience the camera is the winner and I am the looser in cold temperatures.

Guess you have access to reloading the batteries from day to day - if not get a few more extra batteries.

Thanks guys!

I like the idea of a power pack inside the coat. I am taking a Goal Zero solar panel and power block for recharging during the day. I also should have power in the tea houses in the evening.

I will have to look at how the camera fits under the coat for my next gear shake out training hike.

My only complaint about this camera is the battery life :(

Never been to those kind of temperatures before, but my advise is to keep the vertical grip away, until you have to absolutely use it. That way, you will be able to take advantage of those extra batteies while its warm.

Chance is.. it will perform better than you. Have a safe trip.

with an average altitude of 3,000 meters and above. The highest point we been and stayed overnight is the Daogeng Yading which is 4,900m and the morning temperature drop to around -10 C. My Sony A7RII with original Sony batteries got shutdown almost immediately. Surprisingly the 3rd party batteries run as usual but with a shorter lifespan. But when the weather return to warmer the Sony original battery be reusable again. During my second trip to Hokkaido Japan I wrap my A7RII battery compartment with the Iron Oxide hand warmer and the Sony batteries run as normal. I hope this help your trip to cold places.

Thanks for the feedback!
