Q is out of stock; is Q v2 or Q Vario coming?

I find it interesting that the Q's retail price has not budged since it was released over 2 years ago. That means that demand is keeping up with supply.
No, that's just typical Leica. They rarely decrease the price until a new model comes out.
The price of the SL just dropped substantially. Is there an SL2 about to be released? We shall see.

Rob
No, I just think it wasn't doing as well as Leica expected.

According to Leica Rumors, a new Leica has been registered, made in Germany,

and so will be announced in 1-2 months.

Is this the new Q or the new SL? What do you think?

Since second guessing Leica is a community sport in this forum, let me play the game.

Without exception, the biggest criticism of the Leica Q since its release is the mournful cry of street shooters who wish the camera had been made with a 35mm lens. Is it possible that there will now be two Q models; the original Q with the 'fake' 35mm and 50mm option as well as a new Q with a 35mm lens and no EVF masking options, or possibly only a 50 mm masking option yielding close to a 16 MP sensor equivalent ?

To my way of thinking, this would be a more popular option than the current version of the Q.

Really? Where has all of this criticism been? Plenty of 28mm street shooters in the world. Sounds like you saw a few people say they wish it had a 35mm and extrapolated.

You are correct about there being a lot of 28mm street shooters. traditionally, the preferred focal length has been 35mm and several top reviewers who really liked the camera said they wished it had been 35mm. Different strokes, etc.

I have shot with both focal lengths and I really think it depends on what you are shooting and what framing you prefer. It was not meant as a criticism, just an observation. One further observation. you seem to have taken offense to my comments. No offense intended. Just an observation from the some of the same published sources that you probably read as well.

I wouldn't sell my Q. It's near perfect the way it is.

If it came with a tilting LCD, few more MP's (28-32MP), and 4K video (with manual exposure settings), I may be tempted to upgrade in a couple of years.

Oh yeah, and weather-sealing. That would be huge.

I agree. It looks like a really great camera and I would be tempted except I already have a small Fuji X70 ( APSC & 28mm f/2.8) for a walk around camera and if I added the much superior Q to my collection including my M9P and T, I would have some serious explaining to do at home. I am waiting patiently for the new TL2 to appear at my local shop.

Or you could consolidate your T and X70 for a Q. Less cameras would need no explanation :-)

I won't give up the T except for a TL2. The X70 is expendable.

Q titanium gray is now marked as discontinued on B&H:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1293334-REG/leica_19012_q_typ_116_digital.html

The new Q must be near!
The titanium Q was always ment to be a limited edition item.
Just because the titanium is listed as discounted doesn't mean a new Q is on the horizon. The black is still available, and will be for quite some time probably.

I can see a new Q coming at the end of 2018. Or Leica might just continue making the Q/28, and introduce a Q/35 or Q/50 alongside the already excellent Q/28.

Q² might be coming, but Leica doesn't usually upgrade every 2-3 years I think? The cycle is more like 4-5 years. And Q is nowhere finish technically to be needing an upgrade. Q35 might be more realistic although I don't see it happening.

My glass tells me:

- the Q remains the same, The old X-line will disappear. So far no other focal length for the Q to come (wish it would have a 40mm)

- a new Mini-SL will come with T-Bayonet and APS-C 24MP Sensor. Layout like Q and SL, just a small form factor, almost like Q/TL2. Classical layout of buttons to work as used. Same lenses as with the T-Line, plus adapters for all kind of lenses you can wish. EVF is in the body, and the price I would expect it to be around 2700$ body only.

- I see a small chance that there will be a new X in the shape of Q, with 24MP and APS-C, built in EVF, 23mm lens (35mm) fix

Myself I am waiting for that kind of Leica, no other manufacturer can satisfy me. And I tried a lot in the past. It's a question of the heart, touches my senses, and there is nothing I can do against.

Daniel

Oh, then Q is not for you, even Q2.
And so I am waiting for the Q Vario.
Why not get the new Leica TL2? APS sized sensor and the ability to add a high quality Leica zoom lens. Just liek the X Vario, but with the added capabilty of changing a lens.

Wooo, let me play this game too!

TL2 has just been released, using a new state of art 24mp aps-c sensor. Leica could not put this sensor investment in just a interchangeable camera product group. So it's logical to assume they would want to expand to other product group in case one don't do as well.

the X typ 113 is due for a refresh. There's also a patent for 2/23mm "summicron" possibly to address the "roving" aperture when close focusing where f1.7 drifts to f12.8.

my guess is a new Leica X sporting the new 24mp sensor and a new f2/23 lens.

No built-in evf as this product can help move visoflex accessory as well. So you will have m10. Tl/tl2 and X cameras sharing the same accessory.

No weather sealing we can hope but more likely a new x-u will happen.

As we understand it, leica is all about profit and this imo is their next step.

just a wild stab in the dark!
You are aware that the Q unlike the X and T series is a FF camera, aren't you?

Yes I do, we are however responding to the Rumour registered product are we not? Otherwise I would not specifically mention "aps-c" in my post.

Leica has 3 product using the new 24mp full frame sensor already.

The tl2 aps-c? Only 1. Too high risk. Hence if I am the company, I will find another product group targeting a different customer type to use this bulk sensor order that I need to fulfill.
