Panasonic lens repair options?

I have a 20mm f1.7 that seems to have acquired a piece of sand or other grit under the focusing ring.

I don't manual focus too often with this lens, so I'm wondering if I should just let it be.

But if I do decide to have it repaired, I had a couple questions:
  1. Roughly how much could I expect to pay for such a repair?
  2. Can you recommend a repair shop?
The lens is well out of any warranty (and this wouldn't be a warranty case anyway, it's not Panasonic's fault), so I don't insist on sending it back to Panasonic. A third-party lens or camera repair shop is fine as long as they are reputable, and possibly preferred due to price.

you haven't said where you live. Remember this is an international forum.

Depending on how handy and dexterous you are:

I haven't paid someone to work on my cars or houses, pretty much ever. I'm very much a DIY type.

It crossed my mind, but I didn't even bother to ask about DIY repairs for a camera lens b/c I kind of assumed everyone would tell me I'm dumb for even thinking it, lol.

Look like only 9 screws needed to get to the focus ring! You have made me seriously consider it... Edit: 9 screws and a circlip.

Worst case scenario: I have to send it in for repair, which is what I was about to do anyway, right? ;-)

Try DIY.

The lens has depreciated quite a bit. If you screw up, you can always get a used one from EBay, KEH, Amazon , etc. for less than $100. It would surely cost you more than $100 to send it out and get the lens repaired.

Gook luck, and report back your DIY success.

Look like the price floor is closer to $150 (didn't realize they were so cheap now), but your point still stands. I'm thinking I might try the DIY. I'll take some pics while I'm in there, too. :-D

I wonder how did your DIY go. How was it? I have a Lumix 14mm that I might do a DIY but I just don't know where to start. lol

Thanks,

It was easy, and the lens still works great over a year later. My writeup:
