I'm a Sony mirrorless camera user, but I recently rented an A99 ii (with the 70-400mm lens) to use on a safari to Tanzania along with my A7r ii (with the 24-70 GM) lens. Had the 100-400 FE lens been available before I left, I probably would have used that on my A7r II.

I wasn't familiar with the A99 ii, but it helped that the menu system (such as it is) is similar to the A7 series. I still have to edit the pictures, but I'm generally very pleased with the results.

I also shot video with the A99 ii (link below). It was shot in AF from Range Rover safari vehicles using a bean bag. I didn't do any stabilization or color correction (except on one clip) in post, because the out-of-camera results were quite pleasing.

For a variety of reasons, I won't been buying an A99 ii, but I was glad to have rented it.

Great video, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for that, I enjoyed it but some of the clips were, IMO, too short.

Outstanding clarity...I haven't shot any video with my 99II yet, could you share some tips with settings and such?
Thanks. For video, I set it at the best (XAVC S) 4K setting at 24fps, and then just shot video using the movie mode. I assume that this overrides the picture settings, which were in aperture priority most of the time. The video was done only when there was time left after shooting photos, but the OOC results were very good.

So after reading this past forum:

I'm wondering what it is that made you decide to go with the A99m2 and why you wouldn't buy it now after using it? Is it becos you make a lot of video instead of images? You also make video from photographs....

For the sake of consistency and ease of use, I wanted something that shared similarities with the A7r ii, but with a longer native lens. I could have just used the 70-400 on the A7r with an adapter (and in fact did that on the safari balloon ride, because I had no strap on the A99 ii and was afraid of dropping it). However, I was concerned about the focus speed and accuracy. As it turns out, I probably could have gotten by with the A7r ii and the 70-400m but the focusing was much better on the A99 ii.

I'm heavily invested in e-mount and do prefer the smaller body. I also do a lot of video and find that it is somewhat easier than the A99 ii for video.

Great video, very enjoyable, thanks for sharing.

A truly superb video!

I'm very envious of your trip!
