read in this forum that something loose inside G1 - is this a defect or all G1 the same?

how to check that when buying?

I can't speak for all G1's, but I spent an hour or so testing out a G1 at a local camera shop yesterday, and it had no rattles or noises of any kind - most likely this was just an isolated incident of a G1 somehow getting damaged during shipping or manufacturing.

I never noticed it in use, but I was intrigued to try and find a rattle. Yes, there is a soft movement inside. Doesn't seem abnormal, it works a treat. I would be interested in finding out what it is. Should be able to tell by looking at one of their expanded drawings. It feels like a bit of play near the lens/iris? It won't keep me awake at night anyway

I just bought a G1 during the lunch hour and had the salesman bring me three different G1's to check for the rattle sound when moving the camera back and forth. All three had the rattle sound, although I did not check any of the three for the rattle sound with the camera on and lens fully extended.

I even shook the Nikon 990, and I could also hear something loose inside, although not nearly as audible as what I found on the G1. Hopefully, this in no way affects picture quality or camera durability.

Seeing as how little movement and the fact that it is only when the camera is powered down, it's probably a mechanical characteristic of the lens.

It's probably something like those old collapsing tellescopes with multiple tubes, where each section is only held in place at the connection to the next tube. When the lens is extended, it's inside another outer tube to keep it stable, but when it's inside the camera, the part it is attached to is on one end (near the front of the body) while it's kinda dangling towards the back of the body.

This worries me, even though there doesn't seem to be any problems with picture quality yet, but one would think that this could get jammed and lock up under enough shock/impact. Only time will tell, unless somebody drops theirs soon.

I may take mine back just becuase of this and if I can't get consistant results with the external flash. It may be worth taking it back and waiting until it's available through Good Guys or some other place that offers a replacement protection plan!

Found where the noise comes from -- I think ...

If you power on the camera ... the lens tube will be extended .. try to hold and gently shake the tube .. you will find there is some slack .. and the sound is very similar to what we hear ...

why Canon just keep quiet if this is normal?

isn't it better if they announce about this and bring peace of mind to all of us?

I have the same rattle with my brand new g1. The store didn't have another for me to test so I went to Fry's. They have a new g1 on their demo stand and it's the same thing. It is also the same loose lens assembly on their demo Sony s70 which supposedly may have the same lens.

Conclusion? I suspect the lens on the outer lens barrel is just a piece of glass used to protect the innards. I don't think it is used for imaging or focusing e.g. Given the degree of free play, we would have seen some serious degradation in image quality if it had been.

I also have the same rattle. The lens has some free play in all positions - when the camera is off, fully extended, in wide angle and telescopic setting. The pictures seem fine though, probably this is normal.

Did anybody hear anything from Canon???
regarding "little" loose lens assembly that causes
this "famous noise issue".
I'm not really concerned about the noise...
my concern is -- loose lens tube.

Did anyone exchanged/returned their G1s because of that????

Absolutely no rattle of any kind on mine... except for the fabulous 1Gig Microdrive booting up at power on. :)

Kevin,

Touch the front lens tube and push it sideway, you will find that this is a losely fit item, both when retracted and extende, in some case this could rattle but should be be a problem at all.

Tuan Tran,

I observe the same thing on my G1. I'm wondering if anybody else notice
this loose lens assembly.

It's the same on all G1, I therefore concluded that it is part of the design, not a fault

Most all of the consumer digital cameras with an external zoom lens have play in the lens assembly if you man-handle it. It is not mad to be grabbed and shaken by the lens. My Oly 2000 has the same issue. That never stopped it from taking great photos. I always used the lens adapter and a UV filter on the camera to protect and keep clean the lens. I now have a G1 which I am following the same philosophy with. I have tried using a polarizing filter with the G1 ...WOW... what a difference it makes, rich and beautiful colors. I am sold on the polarizing filter.

I don't have any rattle in mine. The only movement on the lens happens if you move it yourself. I think a few microns at best. I would consider that normal for any camera with a telescoping lens on it.
