Sitting at balcony and enjoying my morning coffee I´ve suddenly heard deep&hefty BZZZZZ. Something nearly touched my ear flying close to my head. I jumped like antilope hearing lion´s roar just behind her back. It was a beatle - very big (as for what is normal in this location) maybe 6-7 cm and having wings wide open even bigger.

He landed at the end of balcony and then - obviously - where is my GH5???

Well, I did not know whether he will sit there for few seconds or few minutes - so in that time press I completely forgot all those M43 fine tricks as focus bracketing or post focusing. I just switched to A mode selected the smallest AF point and switched to AFFocusing. Beatle was not very cooperative - constantly turning his back towards lens and I have no way to take a shot from different angle. I prefer tilting screens more but fully articulating screen - however - save my shots. Having 100-300mm at 300mm and later 14-140II it was not an easy job to keep the eye area in focus - as I was constantly micro-moving back and forth. However after some bursts I managed my opportunity. So I share photos for those who are interested.

Finally I decided to try 42,5/1,7 with rings - but after returning back with new setup the bug was already gone - no luck.

BTW - what is a name for this creature ??

John, Paul, George, or Ringo. Your choice
LOL - but semi serious point for OP - Beatles were a pop group beetles are insects.
Yeah - sorry for my bad English, you are obviously correct :-)

I think the Latin name is Cetonia aurata, it has different names like Goldsmith beetle or Rose chafer.
Agree - I was looking for latin origin and found this:

EN: Rose Chafer, DK: Guldbasse, FR: Cétoine dorée hanneton des roses, HR: Zlatna mara, HU: Rózsabogár, GER: Gemeiner Rosenkäfer, SK: Zlatoň obyčajný
:-)

They are found where you are, and look like your images.

Great photos of it, by the way!

Thanks - that is it. However never seen it in reality before.

WIKI states normal size 14-20mm - but this one was just huuuge.
I have seen one closer to 30mm so they can grow a very large. But the sound they generate when they fly is the interesting one. Like how can such generate such a sound that sounds like a flamethrower or a truck passing by.
Yes - truck or something like taht. You know wasp - not pleasant sound, big hornet is much worse and this one sounds like at least two hornets or cockchaffers in the same moment - I felt the air vibrating at my ear. It was so close as if it wanted to crash me to my head. I was just happy that I started with 300mm FL - 1,5 m distance was quite safe LOL - only then I changed to 14-140.

If we're going by height, it's probably Paul.

This damned Beatle/beetle gramatics. Why you cannot make it simple for non native speakers :-)
