Some real-world test images from the 10-20mm I bought today

Wow, this is really great - thanks for uploading! Corner to corner performance looks good stopped down, which is exactly what I was hoping for. In fact the corners at 10mm look better than the corners at 16mm on my 16-35VR. There is a bit of haze in the 16mm f5.6 shot which might be due to spherochromatism. Anyway you wouldn't expect front to back sharpness in a deep scene at f5.6.

Will test my copy for focus issues. Fortunately since it's an AF-P lens, it will autofocus fast and accurately in live view for more critical shots.

Lovely, just lovely. I particularly enjoy the brownish tones which I notice on almost all images - it reminds me of sepia which I like a lot. They should call 10-20 4.5-5.6 ART.

It's good to know that OP will keep the lens!

Trolling, added to ignore list.

I landed a 10-20 f/4.5-5.6 copy today. Although I sort of stopped buying DX lenses my curiosity got the better of me.
Thanks for posting the example pics!
The short: To get both corners and center to my liking I have to set AFFT to 0 @ 10mm and to +7 @ 20mm. The images below show the differences. These are all full size images from my D7200 converted with Capture NX-D to make use of the lens corrections. Look in the dead center where I focused and in each of the corners for the difference AFFT makes.
Yikes. Shifting AFFT values across the zoom range is not encouraging news.
I see it in about 50% of the zoom lenses I try to buy, all Nikon. Most recently 70-200 f/4 and 16-80 DX. Then you have decentering which I have recently found in a 24-70E and a 35 f/1.8 FX. This is just last year.
While this is copy to copy variation (I hoped the 'first samples' would be 'stellar'), this is exactly what I don't like. I set the AFFT to +4 and found that when shooting @ f/11 I got somewhat acceptable results. A quick stroll through the neighborhood:

The guy on the left obviously approves of the new lens! :-)

Actually, he was congratulating me on the exquisite 3D quality of the low-priced-multi-element-zoom ;-)

I think that happens across all brands. I had to go through three Tokina 11-20mms before I found one that was even throughout the frame... I guess it's not easy making a wide angle zoom.

By the way, how does it handle? Is it great as a walkaround wide angle travel zoom? Are you able to test how effective VR is? Can we get 1/2s shutter speeds at 10mm?

Great photos, by the way :)

I'm very interested to learn how this lens specifically compares to the 2017 Tamron 10-24mm.

Thanks. It's very small and light @ 300 grams so it will be great as a travel WA. Zooming is smooth and focus locks on easily onto much anything, even slightly rippling water. The only strange thing I noticed is that the front cap easily falls off, happened every time it was in my bag; this never happens with any other lens I have.

I can't turn off VR on my D7200 so it's hard to test the real world difference. Besides I'm not very good at holding cameras very still so best wait for reports from others.

Decided it will go back tomorrow, guess I'll try the 15mm Irix lens with my D750 for the same angle of view.

No kidding, for sharpness at f8 at the wide end, this thing beats the 16-35VR.

Long end the borders look a bit weak. Where did you focus - on the building?

Thelenspainter is now literally blind, he's ignoring me :-)

f4.5 image looks horrible, and f8 image is obviously oversharpened in LR, just look at the noise in the sky, and the edges.

But we're not going to tell him. Sure, AF-P 10-20 beats 16-35 VR.

i AGREE the pics look good. Complain, Complain Complain!

I would hate to be retail with all the returns.

Well, when I was in the shop and trying to decide between the 10-20 and the Irix 15mm the sales person said "why don't you try the 10-20 out?" So I took it home. No problem with the shop to return it if the condition is still impeccable.

Cameras is another matter and I never return those.

I think it's sad that when the resolution of the sensors goes up and the lenses get sharper and sharper the copy to copy variation of the lenses gets increasingly more noticeable.
