My wife is such a trooper. I've been chomping at the bit to drive out to the Bonneville Salt Flats to do some experimenting with off camera flash in daytime shooting. Today when I asked her what she wanted to do she suggested that we drive on out to the Flats and do some "camera stuff" knowing that it was going to be a 2 hour drive and a hot bastage.

Anyway, here's some of what we did today.

Some things that I learned: I had to work hard with my flash. I'm definitely going to invest in some ND filters (HSS would be nice, but it will have to wait). I was using a 300 WS strobe with just the 8" reflector and it worked good for fill, but I want to be able to bring down the background a bit more. Also, the Salt Flats, though a hot bastage, are awesome. We're going back again, this time just prior to sunset.

Generally nice. The sky is a little too "aqua" for my taste, and there seems to be some sort of darker "shadow" against the white on both sides of her black top.

I love the idea and setup.

I just think it could be improved greatly if she were not dead-center in the frame.
If she were off to the side, I'd be wondering what/who she is waiting for.
But as-is... meh

Nice in lots of ways, but could be even better with some attention to the details, especially in composition. As noted, she needs to be off-center and she needs to be rotated 180 degrees to the left. Think about the sticker on the luggage & you'll see what I mean. So, move her (or yourself) so that she is located on the right side of the frame.

Another detail--her top is full of gathers. Have her smooth out her clothing to eliminate wrinkles and gathers once she's in position. Also, I'm not sure the material placed on top of the luggage does you any favors. It adds some unnecessary clutter to a scene that is relatively stark.

Thanks for the feedback. Appreciated. I think I see the "shadow" you're talking about. Perhaps some PP adjustment is in order.

As far as the aqua sky, I purposely tweaked it a bit that way with complementary colors in mind. But I do understand that it is a matter of taste.

I do see what you're saying vis a vis the composition. I was shooting for a kind of "in the middle of nowhere" look.

As far as off center, maybe something more like this; another shot from the session.

This is really nice.

I wish you wouldn't have cropped so close to the bottoms of her shoes.

Thanks. So do I. I wish I would have brought the camera down a bit. As it was, I ended up having to clone some light stand out of the frame on the right hand side.
