Guys, I just want to confirm I'm not making a mistake. When I assign focus mag to the AEL button I only get 4.8× mag, instead of 4.8 and 9.6 mag.

I'm using the cam with adapted lenses, so having focus mag on AEL is easier, and quicker.

When you select focus mag with the AEL button, you should see, on the right side of the display, that the center button and wheel allow for movement of the focus area, and soft key B should have "x9.6" beside it.

Bob, thanks. I ahould of been more specific.

With soft key B you can toggle between 4.8 and 9.6 mag, using the same key.

If you assign focus mag to the AEL button you only get one level of mag, using that button. No way to toggle it. You still need to use soft key B for the other level of mag.

So I take it that I haven't missed a setting, it's just Sony's poor design.

Well I do not see this as a "poor design'', but rather as a god-sent.

I have never used or been happy with that high magnification: it is just too fuzzy and prevents quick back to full image view and actually shooting.

So I do not care to ever use it.

I will play with taking AEL off (which I cannot recall ever using except by accident orby rubbing my camera on my hip when carrying it). I rather half-press the shutter button on a dark part of the frame, realign and shoot.

Good riddance" big mag" then, I hope.

Yes you are correct you do only get one level of magnification with AEL button and yes it is yet another poor design feature on sony's part as you have to then go to soft key B for x9.6 which is a shame as I use this all of the time with legacy man focus lenses, the button is perfectly placed in my opinion and makes this camera a pleasure to use in mamual mode. To me this is much more preferable than focus peaking although I often use both.
