Hi, i am thinking of upgrading my Nikon d90 and going for the Fuji X system. Part of the reason is because i'd like a smaller setup and obviously better image quality.

I can get an X-T20 with 18-55 kit for 1300$ or i can get an X-T1 body only for 850$ but then i'd need a lens and the 18-55 is quite expensive when bought separately. There is also a discounted X-T10 with 18-55 for 850$.

Which one would you get? I have held both the X-T1 and X-T10 in hand in a store and the X-T1 felt better and more solid to me. Not sure how the X-T20 is as they had none available.

I'd suggest the XT-20. The X-T1 is a great camera but getting long in the tooth... I have not owned the X-T20 but have heard some good things about it. The 18-55 'kit' lens is a great option

XT-20 will 'feel' very similar to XT-10.

your main decision is whether you want or need the additional features of the XT-20.

If not, then X-T10 vs X-T1 decision is based on size (not that different), WR, viewfinder size and then the little bells and whistles.

in your situation, i think I'd go for the XT-10 kit, learn the system, buy glass, and then, perhaps in a couple of years, get the X-T20 or T2 when they announce the next generation after that.

If it was me I'd go for the X-T20 + 18-55 kit.

I've had the X-T1(very nice) and tested the X-T20 - in my opinion the X-T20 is a better camera than the X-T1 (and X-T10) in all respects other than ergonomics. (In the end I upgraded to the X-T2 because the latest firmware made it worth the money.)

However if you want to minimise your expense, then go for the X-T10 + 18-55.

Lastly - coming from a DSLR you will be more comfortable with the X-T1/T2/T10/T20 than the X-E1/2 or X-Pro series because they are more DSLR-like.

Although the previous generation of fuji cameras are still great, there have been significant improvements, and I would recommend either the X-T20 or X-T2 depending on budget. Although the X-T20 isn't that much lighter or smaller than the X-T2, it works great as a 'carry all the time' camera with the XF27. Whatever camera you decide on, don't miss out on the XF18-55, as it really is capable of great results.

All current X-cams will have the same IQ, the lenses make the difference. I recently upgraded to the X-T100 and find it to be an excellent solid camera. Adding the Lensmate thumb rest completes the luxury feel. It's primarily a still camera though, if you need best quality Fuji video you need to spend a lot more.

Thought i'd come back and give an update, can't believe it's been almost two years since i made the initial post.

I ended up going for the Fuji X-T1 and a 35mm f2. Fantastic kit for just about everything i needed and i am happy i went for it. I've used only this combo for about one year as i did not want to just buy lenses unless i really needed them.

Since then my kit has expanded a bit and i added:
  • Samyang 12mm - mainly for astro, rarely used but quite affordable
  • 60mm Macro - portraits, close-ups this has become my second most used lens
  • 18-55 mm - general lens, main vacation lens and casual outings when i don't feel like switching lenses
Some negative points:
  • had to replace the rubbers on the X-t1(warranty repair), the rubber cover on the left side is starting to bulge so i might have to replace that also soon.
  • The apperture rings on the 60mm and the 18-55 feel too loose when compared to the 35f2's ring.
  • Autofocus hunts quite a bit in low light
Two years later and i don't feel the need to upgrade the X-T1, it is still an excellent camera and more then enough for my needs. My next purchase will be one of the tele lenses the 55-200 or the xc 50-230 and i think that's going to be it. Kit complete.

I would recommend this:
