Can I trust my D750?

Hi fellow enthusiasts!

Long time lurker, 3 years, first time poster.

First of all I would like to thank you for all the experience and inputs in the Nikon threads which have been very helpful!

After buying my Nikon D750 in Hong Kong in September 2015, I went for a long trip around south east asia in 2016. After about 3000 shutter actuations, I got the dreaded ERR message with the mirror locked in upright position on the first shot after the camera had been sitting for a while.

The camera wasn't affected by the first recall but it was affected by the second recall. I sent the camera in for repair a month ago and it's working fine now. They replaced the shutter and the grip.

After reading some posts about some members having shutter failures even though the shutter had been replaced I'm getting a bit anxious. I'm leaving for a 6 week long trip around central asia soon and wouldn't want a failure.

Is it likely the shutter will fail or give the dreaded ERR message again after it had been replaced?

Thank you for your input!

Over the last three years I've put over 50,000 shots on my D750 with no problems.

My shutter got stuck once in the beginning. I took the lens off, looked inside and freed the shutter with my finger. Never happened again. I also encountered the shutter shading issue recently, but that was one photo out of over 50,000 shots, so I have no complaints. I trust the camera and I wouldn't exactly call my incidents "problems", because they didn't really hold me back for longer than a minute.

The EXACT same thing happened to me multiple times this week on my vacation. I bought my 750 when it was released so it's several years old, and to be honest I haven't kept up on the various recalls, etc. I'm obviously out of warranty, but is there a particular recall my camera might be eligible for if I decide to send it in?

Check the serial number. It likely does have a service advisory. Nikon doesn't care if your camera is out of warranty. If there's a recall, they'll fix it for free. I know, because I've asked them.

Thanks - I checked and in fact my camera is affected based on serial number. Kind of happy to be honest, looks like a new shutter and cleaning for free w/ free shipping. Can't beat that!

Exactly. Silver linings!

Where do you check?

My D750 has now gone in for repair. already on its second shutter. I am waiting with bated breath to find out what the issue is. Will let you know what they say.

Have to say, I really want the camera to be Ok, but have been considering alternatives. As you say, its getting harder and harder to have faith it will last without another fault cropping up.

Thank you for all your replies. It's not a troll post, It is a very good camera and it was expensive (for me) so I really would want it to be reliable considering the investment and period I am abroad travelling.

What was the issue the first time you sent it in and what is the issue now?

Most of the people who did end up with issues, were early adopters, people who bought the camera when it was first released in 2015. I was one of those people. By now buying a D750 is a very safe bet, considering it's such a high-selling body and issues were worked out since the first and second production. You'll be OK.

Sometimes the ERR is because of a bad or failing memory card. Reduce your risk by using cards on Nikon's recommended list (if you aren't already) and always formatting the cards in-camera, never on your computer.

A few people in the Nikon D750 FB group thought their camera was failing until they swapped memory cards, and the ERR went away.

I have the D750 since March 2015 and have shot close to 65K pictures. So far I got the ERR message twice which is okay with me because it did not stop me from using the camera.

My camera is included in the recall so I'll be sending it for repair soon. I'm an amateur photographer but use the camera quite often. This is one reason why I couldn't send it for repair so far.

In spite of that, it captures beautiful pictures.

You are getting all your replies from fellows with a gold D750 box tattooed on their butt.

You're right. You wouldn't want a failure on a 6 week trip around central Asia or pretty much anywhere. Do yourself a favor and at least buy a cheap D7000 or d3x00 body as a backup. And skip a horror story later.

No. Live in constant paranoia. It's the only way to go through life.
