I have read lots about this lens and I can afford it..... Just. I have ordered the Sigma 70-200 picking it up tomorrow that has not left much room for a WA zoom. :(

I might be able to swing a deal if I both at the same time..maybe.

Anyway Has anyone used the 15-30 lens successfully indoors. Parties etc. Where I would love to catch the Party atmosphere lighting without using flash. I am going to NZ soon for a friends wedding and would love to catch the Celibrations (lots of drunKen people making fools of thenselves, :)) at the reception in the Disco stlye lighting atmosphere. There will be a also be a band. I would love to get some good shots of them also.

May be a coulpe of examples of you shots, what with and camera setting would be good.

Thanks in advance.

I used it recently at a wedding party, it was just great.

At f/3.5 and ISO800 you can expect to have shutter speeds of 1/15 to 1/30, and at 15mm that's really more than enough.

I don't have samples right here, but if you want I'll send you some this evening.

Looks like you're going to have a similar setup to mine! I've got the sigma 70-200 two weeks ago too :) It's a great lens!

I've been using one with a D60 for nearly a year, it's a good lens, though a little large and heavy. Two days ago I had the opportunity to compare it with a Canon 17-40 L lens. At F5.6 the difference is there, but you have to really search it out. The L lens is not that much better!

As regards low light work, I've used it extremely successfully to photograph school concerts etc., without the need for flash. I have no images uploaded that have been taken indoors in low light, but in Gallery 12 of my web site, there are low light outdoor images taken with the 15-30.

Buy it, you won't be disapointed.

Those Photos on your site are excellent. WOW.

Were they taken hand held?

I use a rather inexpensive yet really good set of lenses:
-Sigma 15-30
-Sigma 70-200
-Canon 28-135
-Canon 50/1.8

The 28-135 tends to stay on the shelf though, but it can be useful in certain situations.

I'll post 15-30 indoor/night samples tonight (UK time)

Your gallery is certainly beautiful and inspiring to me!

I like your "view" a lot. I think I'm improving with time but I'm still not at your level. It feels like I'm like learning to use my eyes since I started to be interested in photography.

Hre's a gallery: all deer shots were made with the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX (IF APO HSM)
http://www.pbase.com/ogilloire/richmondpark

A great lens, fast and silent focusing! Extra sharp from f/3.2, sharp at 2.8 but with a little halo around edges.
I use a rather inexpensive yet really good set of lenses:
-Sigma 15-30
-Sigma 70-200
-Canon 28-135
-Canon 50/1.8
Is that the Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX? Could you please post pics.

For some reason the focal length is wrongly reported at 200mm as 456mm.
But it actually is 200mm.

Some pics are not perfectly in focus, this was my first time with this lens so I wasn't used to focusing with it. The pictures at the end were taken one week later and are more in focus.

Here are a few ones in low light, iso1600. They're not the best in the world but if you don't look too close, they look quite good (or I think so!)

Check out my website: if that's the kind of "disco" lighting you're going to have, don't worry about the lens' abilities to take shots without flash, because you'll need a flash anyway. Most of my pics in clubs are taken with a 15mm fisheye, and I stick to ISO400 because it's the last clean ISO setting on the D60, and it does really well. You'll use speeds between 1/30 when there's a lot of light, and as low as 1/4 or sometimes 1s, to catch the mood of the lights. Then a flash is obligatory because even at 1/30 you can't freeze someone dancing, so forget about ambient light on your subject and use a flash, you'll freeze any dancer, and you'll be able to catch the colors in the background. A wideangle is a must in parties because you have much more chances to get your subject in the frame when the light is low and you sometimes can't frame in the viewfinder, so you blind-shoot with the camera at arms length, then crop the pic later.

I don't use Av or Tv in clubs: too unpredictable. Your disco lights aren't likely to change much unless there is a person especially assigned to the lights, so you put the cam in M mode, open the lens to the max, and find the good shutter speed that gives you a good exposure.
Show us how it went, of course!

Yes the first one is slightly backfocussing, but the second looks alright to me. The DOF is so short that the whole deer is not in focus, but the body and the horns look in focus to me.

It feels like the accuracy of the AF is not good enough to match a DOF that short, but I now fine tune the focus manually (that hurts the eyes ;))
Salut Olivier
I have the bad feeling your 70-200 is back focusing on some
shots... like this one: http://www.pbase.com/image/20693927
the grass is sharp somewhere behind the deer, or is it my eyes? the
deer itself doesn't seem so sharp :-/
this one, too: http://www.pbase.com/image/20693920
