This long-running thread started way back in 2009.

Number 01: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/33469604

This is number 138 in the series.

GUESS THE PLACE RULES

These are the rules for this continuing thread:

I will post a picture of a place on Earth in this thread. The person who guesses where it is (with my approval) can then post a new image of somewhere on Earth. And so on.

Both the city/town/area and the country must be stated.

It doesn't matter if it's really hard but keep in mind that people must have a chance to guess it. If nobody has guessed it after 48 hours, a new image may be posted by anyone. If more than one person posts a picture, the first image is in play.

New images must be posted as replies to the original message and within 24 hours; otherwise there will be a free turn.

All makes of cameras are welcome.

Where is this nice little bay?

This small bay is part of a much larger bay at the head of which is a large city founded by Batman.

The mythological beast just offshore is usually referred to as "the hound of Hades".

Brian, I think we might be looking down on Half Moon Bay, Melbourne, Australia?

(Site of the HMVS Cerberus which was sunk as a breakwater off the bay?)

Cheers,

Max.

Max, you are, of course, quite right.

Just to explain the Batman clue for those unfamiliar with Australian history. It has nothing to do with Gotham City - John Batman is credited with founding Melbourne at the head of Port Phillip Bay, of which Half Moon Bay is a small part.

Your turn, Max.

Cheers

Brian

What was it? What is it now?

Shouldn't be too difficult.

Captain James Cook named a prominent local landmark during his first voyage of discovery. There were no automobiles back then...

The former Dunedin Chief Post Office (1937), designed by Government architect J.T. Mair, occupies an entire city block in The Exchange, the historic business centre of Dunedin. The impressive building, constructed of reinforced concrete faced with stone, provided a long-called for central location for government services in Dunedin, and was considered a monument to the importance of the role of the state and also to Dunedin's preeminent position as the country's most prosperous city. The building housed postal services until 1997 when New Zealand Post was restructured, and postal services shifted to Strathallan Street. Since that time the building has stood empty, with a number of suggested development proposals faltering. In 2007 the future of the building continues to be discussed, with a proposal for hotel and apartment accommodation.

Apologies if my lack of photographic knowledge is catching.
Yes, it is the former Dunedin Chief Post Office Building, at 283 Princes St. Dunedin, now operating as the Distinction Dunedin Hotel.

Over to you.

This looks like what's left now from a WWI trench, would that be somewhere between north of France and belgium?
