Complimentary lens to 70-200 f/4 (A7s)?

Hi guys,

I have recently started doing weddings and got the A7s to shoot the receptions or any other low light moments.

I am anxiously awaiting the 70-200 to arrive but would also like to get something wider and was hoping some of you can give me some suggestions.

At first I was looking at two of the sigma E mounts (19 and 30mm) but then I heard there will be vignetting with both of these lenses. Is this correct?

Someone suggested that I can put the A7s in "crop mode" but doesn't that deteriorate the image? I'm hoping to produce a final product in HD so prefer not having some of my footage cropped.

Anyways, I'm thinking of the 28mm 2.0 or the 35mm 1.8, so any advice on either of those two, or any other lens would be GREATLY appreciated.

The 35 f1.8 is an APSC lens.

The 28 seems like a good choice. That, or simply the 24-70 f4 zoom.
 
I have the 70-200mm, f/4 and 24-70, f/4 and find they meet 90% of my photographic needs. Would like to get the FE 90mm macro lens for close ups but find the 1.5x or 2x mags work well.

Nikon V1 + 10-30 & 30-110 lenses.
 
I'd go for the 24-70, though the 28 could work if budget is a problem.

Depends a lot on your shooting style -- can you work with a single focal length?

Mostly video? As you mention HD
I posted example from sigma 19mm in full frame mode with removed rear baffle just last weekend. You can search the forum.
 
If you're shooting with just one body, I'd get the 24-70 f4 zoom to pair with your 70-200. You want the versatility of the zooms instead of swapping out your primes throughout the wedding. If you had two bodies, then I'd have a fast prime (35mm 1.4 or 50mm f1.4) on one body and keep the 70-200 on the other.

Unless you do just video APSC lenses like the 35 1.8 OSS ( sel35f18 ) don't make much sense on a FF body.

Sigma 19mm with removed rear baffle


the sigma art 30 and 60 are similar when rear baffle is removed, bout you are way better of getting sel28f20 and/or sel50f18F in terms of low light performance as they are both faster apertures and cover full frame.

For photos I really like the fe28f20 and sel55f18z on the A7S
For video OSS lenses are great unless you have a gimbal or similar..
 
If I were you, I'd pick up the zeiss 24-70 f4 as your general usage lens (or the kit 28-70), and a few legacy manual focus lenses considering you're shooting video. Some older nikkor or minolta lenses like a 50 f1.4 would be a great pickup as well.
 
Thanks for the advice everyone. Seems like the way to go is the 24-70 f/4. It's quite costly as an upfront investment but it makes sense for the long haul.

I would't put the A7S in crop mode either.

I started out with the FE 28 for all my wide shots. But it wasn't wide enough in some situations and too wide in others. So i bought a used FE 16-35 F4 and love it.
 
Agreed - I think every videographer I know that uses the Sony mirrorless full frame bodies has the 16-35 f4 in their kit
 
I have an A7SI/II and the 24-70 f/4. I mostly shoot video. I wouldn't recommend that lens for video since the manual focus feel is one of the worst in the FE lineup. It's not just numb, it's variable. Making manual focus adjustments frustrating to say the least and useless for run-and-gun. (Though it's fine for static objects since you can fuss with the focus all you want.) And the performance is meh. Nothing to write home about.

The FE 16-35 f/4, on the other hand, is a great, must-have lens.

For mid-range I prefer primes like the Zeiss Loxia series (I have the 35mm and it's like butter) or even A-Mounts with adaptors, since A-Mounts use physical gears for focus throw and have full electronic compatibility with the A7 series bodies with the LEA3 adaptor (I have a set of the fast Sony Zeiss lenses in A-mount - I use them on my A77II, FS7 and A7SI/II cameras almost every day).

I heard the GMaster 24-70 has a decent focus feel, but I haven't use it yet.. and it's probably outside your budget anyhow.

So, in short I recommend getting the 16-35 and start building a set of Loxia glass, starting with the 50mm f/2. That will give you the full 16-200 range, with a reasonably fast one in the middle.

Good decision. I'm normally not a wide angle shooter, but lately the 16-35 hopped on my camera and isn't getting off.

I bought my 16-35 for $584 after trading in a Pentax lens or body for it - forget which. At KEH.com, great company to deal with and they also provide a 4 month warranty for their sold items - if i remember correctly.
 
Do you need/want/use OSS and/or autofocus ?
Also clear image zoom can be used to zoom with primes if you only shoot video in 1080p
