My first Aurora! Pic, pano and time lapse

I've been waiting for an opportunity for a year and a half, and finally things worked out with a aurora strength KP 7.3 or so.

Part of the reason I bought the Samyang 24/1.4 was for auroras, so I put it to good use.

Taken at 740m by Akaroa NZ.

This pano has a strange WB, to please some viewers.



The time lapse is 53s long, with the correct WB (Daylight).

Wow, I am surprised how the boat only "travels a little faster" than the stars across the screen...

How long did the time lapse take to accomplish? Did you use the SLR?

Interesting observation. looks like it's seen for 33s, so about an hour and a half. Maybe fishing?
How long did the time lapse take to accomplish? Did you use the SLR?

This is all with the K5 taking raw pics.

The first pic is a frame from the time lapse, though I lowered the exposure in PP as it blew out a bit in the vid PP.

My TL settings were 4s exposures (the first 6-7 seconds at 6s) with a 3s delay => 7s interval. The vid is 53s long at 24fps, so that's ~ 53 x 24 x 7s = 8904s = 148min = 2.5hrs

To be exact I used 1290 frames. Then for the pano another 55 shots for the pano, with 1 min exposures (Astrotracer), 2s delay, say 7s of changing adjustments. Over an hour.

You are the first to mention the video. I'm glad someone liked it!

Well, if the aurora is strong enough, I guess you can get pics as high as 36 deg latitude or so. I've seen some sad pics from Auckland. You are at 33.7 deg.

I'm at 43.8 deg. At the bottom of the Sth Island is the town Bluff, at 46.6 deg.

Tekapo is a popular spot for auroras, and it's just 44 deg. The altitude (710m+), dry air and dark zone help a lot! So I was at a similar latitude, altitude and darkness. The wind was from the north which help with dryness.

Iceland is at 65 deg, so they have a lot more opportunities.
