Just out of the blue my D750 started showing the dreaded "Err", at the same time the rear display stopped working. No matter which button I press on the back, the display remains black. I can't take any pictures either, naturally.

When I remove the lens and press the shutter release once, the mirror flips up and back down again, but the aperture lever on the left remains in the top position. At that precise moment the upper display shows a blinking "Err". If I press the shutter release again, mirror flips up and back down again and this time around the aperture lever flips down and back up again as well and the "Err" message disappears.

I guess I'll have to let service take a look, what beats me is that the rear display fails at the same time the aperture control is playing up (after having taken a mere 2000 pics on this body in total I hasten to add).

Has anybody got an idea what's going on?

I get that on my lens that have a manual aperture ring if the ring isn't set to the highest f number. Does this happen with all your lenses?

Usually the lens aperture error is "FEE," not "Err".

Here's what the manual says (page 472, in the "Error messages" chapter):

No, they're all AF-S. Matter of fact, I got 2 new lenses this morning, which have a rather tight fit compared to the ones I already had - coincidence? Anyway, happens with my older lenses as well.

One more clue: After I press the release button (mirror goes up and back down) the DoF button doesn't move the aperture lever down. Only if I press the button once more does the button do what it's supposed to do. It's as if exposure is now a 2-step process, because the internal flash can't be popped up after the first release either. It's as if the camera thinks its exposing and locks some things down.

I found the ISO button on the back panel to be functional (top LCD changes), so the buttons seem to actually do something.

I also tried the 2-button reset and that appears to be working as well, at least I no longer have backbutton focus, so it seems to have returned to factory setting.

There is no hard reset on the D750 by any chance, is there?

Mine started doing this a few weeks ago. It seems to be most common with fast shutter speeds 1/2000+ happens at first shot then generally works ok rest of the session.
