I am always impressed with this 5mp camera, AF slower than modern cams, but it has other attributes

Its still a great camera, the AF is slower, but that swivel body was brilliant :-), and in reasonable light, if you don't crop too heavily, it matches a modern camera as far as 99% of observers are concerned, I paid £50 for this one used, my 2002 camera was £850, but it still does a great job

I also like the 3rd one best, they all look good at original size. Perfect color tennis ball this time.

The first Mini Challenge I hosted back in 2013 was about not needing all these mp, it was '6mp or below', many terrific images were presented

Well that was and is a terrific camera....Sorry I gave mine away but did keep the 828

Which gives me the idea to take the same shot with all my camera and post them here....

R1, 828, H5, A100, RX10 III, HX100 III, HX400

I remember back then I "upgraded" to an 828 but somehow it just didn't seem as good as the 717, terrific build though!!!, I was completely blown away by my 717 at the time, it was by far the best camera I had ever used, it was around at the same time as the Minolta Dimage 7 (same sensor I think?) but that was about as far as it went, the 717 was better in every way and is still a decent camera today, terrific battery life too :-)

I compared these with other photographers shots with very modern cameras and as far as anybody could tell they were as good/better, that is not noise btw, its dust in the air, these were published on the hospital's (where the heliport is) website and in the staff mag :-)

I use to own one. Great camera. With all the improvements made in the last 15 years, for a web photo it is hard to find a new camera that takes better photos than the F-717...even now.

Nice regardless of the age of the camera! I sure had some good shots with my 717.

I use to love my Sony f707 (the almost-as-good one from the previous year) -- as long as you're OK thinking of 400 ISO as your "high" ISO, that was a really good camera. Certainly in bright enough light (or doing slow exposures on a tripod -- I really got into night shots with that camera), you could get very nice shots with it.

Honestly I wish Sony would learn from the design of those and make a modern rx100-type camera that pivots that way, so the viewfinder and screen pivot together. I know this kind of pivoting isn't good for selfies like a flippy screen, but for all other photography I loved having the lens/sensor part pivot freely from the grip/screen/viewfinder part.
