Loved so much of this camera but I am not about to settle for less than D750 IQ especially at higher ISO..dont even try to tell me its the same..its not!

And please don't forget to change your rating; this camera didn't deserve such an insult. Your score might be valid when comparing cameras from different classes, but within its class this camera is a benchmark and should be rated as such.

Will do but first let me actually take a few pics with it! Just got it yesterday and have been very busy catching up from vacation!

Ok gang one more question,,i could not find the answer to this in the manual and called Nikon suppport..they did not know and said they would get back to me but so far no

Under Custom settings F controls..Custom control assignment..select FN1..
I have no options.,.i push the selector button and NONE show up..yet I have seen videos on line in which this button is active..

I called Nikon and the woman did not have a clue.. i know if anyone can figure this out you will ..I should make this a new post but I figured I would give this a try

Thanks in advance

I think that the OP was talking about the noise performance. They are quite different shots (wide angle on APS format vs. telephoto on FF). but I do agree that the noise performance on the D500 is surprisingly poor in the photos posted. Surprising because I see much better performance on mine. When shooting higher iso's, I typically shoot raw and process for noise, but even if the OPs shots are out of camera JPEGs, I'd expect better.
Yes that is what I meant.. I have a new D500 and it remains to be seen what the noise is like..very puzzling..but your post gives me hope..

Congrats on getting another D500 camera! :-) ..what I do these days in post processings, is to run the Nikon image files through their free Capture NX-D software first, then save ("export") the files in "Tiff" formats, then open these files using Lightroom for further post processings..
Cheers, John
Photography is my hobby.

This is precisely my workflow as well (though the 16-bit tiff created from an NX-D conversion is opened in a favored editor that is not an Adobe product). Having shot Nikon digital since 2004, I never previously employed this more cumbersome two-step workflow, instead using the raw converter packaged with the pixel level editor, But with the D500 this seems to provide a more satisfactory outcome for me so I am willing to impose the extra step in the workflow.

Highlight Fn1OFF or Fn1 with command dial and press multi-selector center button. You will see None. Scroll up.

Do you know that there is another manual called Menu Guide which can be downloaded from Nikon's website.

You can judge.. let me know if you see a difference..maybe I am being too pickey...
Do you possibly have a chance to redo such portraits with the D500?

Instead of f/4.8 and ISO 4500 with FX, use the equivalent f/3.2 and ISO 2000 or 2500 with DX. I wonder if one would see a difference between D750 and D500 then.

How did you get such noise free shots?? I am using Lightroom..is that the difference?
I love the feel of the D500 and the widespread focus points but the noise at high ISO has been a problem..but not in these pics..so what is the secret?
I use Capture NX-D and set it to "Noise Reduction 2013", with all sliders set to "50". If you want completely noise-free, you can set it to "80", with "sharpening" set to "70" or so, so that you don't lose all details. You just have to play with the sliders until you get what you're happy with. I downsize all my web images to max 2000px, so that also helps keep the noise down in the final product. Truth is you'll never really look at images at 100%, so there's no point in exporting them at full size, unless you plan to print them large.

Well I made the switch...I now have a D500 and have actually used it

Its all I can ask for..I love the near total coverage of the focus points, the rapid focusing and the four memory banks that really makes changing situations easy to deal with.

Have a laugh : I was looking at one photo that was good but not great,,not quite the quality I wanted,,..then I noticed one little thing.. The ISO was 45000! Ya that might be the cause!

Altogether it's a wonderful camera ..long way from the say ASA 125 was the fast film!

Thanks for everyones advice!

Great!

Would be nice if you could do a "Take II" of your review so people checking reviews will see that before making a definitive opinion :-)

Or maybe try the same type of picture at the same ISO with a D750. Although, to be fair, you should bump the ISO by one stop on the D750.

(What do you mean you can't do that? :-) )

The D750 is a great camera but I found things in the D500 I like better and am now going to post a review,,

I enjoyed this thread very much. I found it very helpful. I have often found when I think my Nikon is not taking photo's with the IQ I expect, ...its pilot error (on my part). I am a novice and really respect the helpfulness of everyone on this thread. I am flirting with the idea of a D500 as my next purchase. I will be giving my D5500 to my wife since she likes the size and the touch screen better.

I've had my D500 since November and am finding it to be a terrific tool for photography. I am moving from the D300 and found there to be a steep learning curve. Likely you'll find the same moving from a D5500. Be prepared to take your time, read up on the differences between your present camera and the new one, and don't get frustrated. Above all, have fun!

Why dont you give her the D500 and keep the D5000 for yourself? :-D

Hello everyone

Well as I explained earlier I did not intend to start this thread.. I was doing something in the section about my gear and answered the question as to what I thought about the D750 ..and next thing you know to my surprise that answer became a thread..

but I am happy to read that at least one person found the thread helpful..

To make a long story even longer.. I now own a D500 and I have looked at pic after pic at high ISO..meaning 4-6000 ISO where a lot of my photos take place .. comparing the D750 and the D500 in Lightroom and I cannot find any difference in noise between the two cameras..so much for the talk about FF vs DX noise... and the same for IQ.. I always thought that if there was such a big difference, why is there any debate about it?

But the real treat is not having to do the focus and recompose thing and having a full view of focus points.....plus my 70-200 is now 105-300..

and with the 16-80mm the camera and lens is a bit lighter..and lighter is better..for me anyway. ( sometime ago I asked why so many people complained about light lenses and someone told me it was the fact that years ago plastic was considered junk and heavy metal good and solid.. and they they said "years from now someone will pick up a heavy lens and think 'dinosaur lens much be junk!" I never forgot that clever line and wish I could remember who wrote it)

Surprisingly I have not been doing much shooting since I started this thread...just a few assignments here and there..but now things are picking up and I look forward to having fun with this thing.. You know sometimes worry about whether or not you are making the right decision can rob you of the fun of enjoying what you bought.. Just the way I am about making decisions, i guess.

any way I hope this thread has been as helpful to others as others have been to me.. Its a long way since my Brownie Bullseye and my Instamatic..high tech for the days when ASA 165 was the fast film!

Have a good day!
