Hello,

My name is Lance I have been looking at moving from my D70 setup to a 4/3 format, I will later in the summer pull the trigger on either the G8 or GX8 I think. In the mean time looking for a used smaller camera as a back up to one of these and hope to grab a lens or two at the same time. My question is which is the best value out there in the used market as far as GF/GX or other series with a kit lens or the 20 1.7?

Thanks Lance

That is the smallest kit that I always have when I leave home.

Any small M4/3 camera + 20/1.7 would be fine. Before the GX1, I used the GF-1 and E-PL2 with the 20/1.7

The 16mpx sensors are noticably better (noise, DR) than the original 12mpx, but, the 12 mpx ones are still good (and inexpensive). My old 12 mpx pictures are still great ! So good that a few months ago, I bought used E-PL1 in good condition. It still makes very nice pictures.

If you do not mind a larger body, the first model of the E-M10 is probably a very good choice too.

My favorite walk around camera is a E-M5 with the 45/1.8

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and great information and opinions, I really wanted a small pocketable 4/3 as a starter and found a GM5 with the 20mm 1.7 and the 12-32mm kit lens. should be here next week and I will let everyone know what I think of the camera. I guess the next purchase will be a longer focal length lens for outdoor events and such, maybe the 45-150mm.

Lance
That is a nice set! I think you will be very happy with the GM5. When you get a little more cash, take a look at the PL 15mm, it is perfect for the GM5!

Hi Lance,

My approach would be to look for a 'good' used like a GX7 whose price has dramatically dropped but a camera you'd still reasonably like to keep once your first body come in.

As for the lens you have some wide choice here.

My 'small' walkaround combo is the PEN-F & 1.8/17..

Enjoy

I'd choose the GX85 (aka GX80), even over the the GX8. The GX8 apparently suffers from shutter shock. They removed the anti-aliasing filter on the GX85 and I've seen some razor-sharp images with it. It has 4k video, and more importantly to me, 5 axis IBIS.

Downside is a less sexy viewfinder.

Spend the money on another lens, wait until the next camera release. Or maybe consider a Pen-F.

Apparently nothing. The GX8 is reputed to show shutter shock with two lenses at slow mechanical shutter speeds by some users. The remaining users cannot find any evidence of it. If I had to base a my buying decisions on the reported experiences of a couple of folks I would not drink, drive, use sugar or salt, etc. So let's not get excited about shutter shock. Every single mechanical shutter will produce some levels of SS. Mirror shock in DSLRs is far greater but has not stopped photographers from using those cameras.

I couldn't be less excited about shutter shock. Just mentioned it so the OP could do some research and make his own decision. The use of the word apparently implies there is some doubt around whether it exists. The main point of my post was that I would personally choose the GX80 over the GX8. Especially if paying full price.

Did you buy this used or new? If new, where did you buy from?

Osa25,

I bought it used under a 1000 clicks, 4 batteries, fake battery to power connection and the lenses, with a half case & strap. Looking forward to playing with it and then deciding this summer which second body to get as a primary.
